Baseball Falls in Extras Against Muhlenberg

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The Ursinus College baseball team were on the wrong side of walk-off victory falling to Muhlenberg College, 8-7, on Tuesday afternoon from Cedar Creek Field.

The Mules fought back from a 6-2 deficit before earning a walk-off victory in the 10th inning during a slugfest that featured 24 total hits and 15 runs scored. At the plate, first-year Brandon Sullivan, juniors Jakob Cantor, and Jude Gilhool paced the Bears lineup tallying three hits apiece. Cantor and Gilhool each collected RBIs, while Sullivan scored twice out of the leadoff spot for the Bears.

The Mules jumped out to an early 2-0 advantage in their opening frame as three walks, a hit-by-pitch, and a single powered the offense through the frame. Muhlenberg's third free pass of the inning scored their first run, while a two-out infield single scored the second run before a strikeout ended the frame. Ursinus quickly bounced back in the ensuing inning as junior Peter Balos recorded a sacrifice fly to scratch across the Bears first run and move their deficit to 2-1. Gilhool and sophomore Shane Beaver led off with back-to-back singles, before a sacrifice bunt from senior Will Kelley advanced both runners into scoring position. Next, Balos collected a sacrifice fly with a fly out to right field before a walk and fly out ended the frame and Bears' threat.

First-year starting pitcher Barritt Ross cruised through his second inning of work on the mound as a strikeout and back-to-back flyouts ended the second inning. Ursinus regained their first lead of the contest in the top of the third inning as four hits and a Mules' error allowed four Bears to score. Sullivan led off with a double, while Cantor's second base hit of the day scored Sullivan to tie the game at two apiece. After junior Andrew Richter walked, Gilhool recorded an RBI single and a groundout by Beaver stretched the Bears' lead to 4-2. Ursinus scored their fourth run of the inning as Balos reached on a fielder's choice allowing Beaver to cross the plate.

After retiring the Mules in order in the third inning, Ursinus responded with a run in the fourth as a sacrifice fly increased the Bears lead to 6-2. Unfortunately, the Bears stranded two runners on base a flyout ended the inning. Ross opened the bottom half of the inning by collecting a pop out, but a walk and a pair of singles cut the Bears lead to 6-3. Ursinus added a run in the fifth inning, but Muhlenberg quickly responded with two runs to cut their deficit to 7-5 as the contest entered the sixth inning.

Muhlenberg tied the contest at seven apiece in the bottom of the sixth inning as two singles, two walks, and an error allowed two runners to score. In the top of the seventh, Kelley led off the inning with a double into left and advanced to third on a groundout. During the next at-bat, Kelly was cut down at the plate trying to advance on a ground ball back to the mound. Sophomore George Nestor advanced into scoring on a wild pitch, but an infield groundout ended the Bears' rally.

Junior righty Mike Scheller took the mound for Ursinus in the bottom of the ninth as Muhlenberg nearly threatened to win the contest. After a leadoff single, a sacrifice bunt moved the winning run into scoring position with just one out. Scheller recorded a strikeout before a ground out to shortstop forced extra innings. Sophomore Kyle Rosenfeld reached base for the Bears in extras, but Muhlenberg capitalized on a pair of singles in the tenth to push across the winning run and earn an 8-7 victory.

The Bears will look to even the season series as they host Muhlenberg College on Friday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. from Thomas Field.
