COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – A ninth inning home run proved to be the difference as the Ursinus baseball team dropped a 3-2 Centennial Conference contest to Muhlenberg on Friday afternoon at Thomas Field.
After three and a half scoreless innings to start, the Bears broke onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth when senior
Will Kelley snuck a single through the right side to score junior
Peter Balos from second base after he led off the inning with a single. Muhlenberg responded with a solo home run to tie the game in the top of the fifth and eventually pulled ahead with a two-out single in the top of the seventh to go up 2-1. Balos opened the bottom of the eighth with a triple and came around to score on a single from sophomore
Kyle Rosenfeld to tie the game at two. However, the Bears loaded the bases with one out but could not push across anymore runs. That would come back to bite in the first at-bat of the top of the ninth inning as the Mules got the decisive solo home run to go up 3-2. Ursinus put runners on first and second base with two outs in the bottom of the ninth before a fly out ended the game.
Four Bears finished with two hits apiece with Balos being one of them and scoring both Bears runs. Sophomore pitcher
Dan Bass went the distance and allowed three earned runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts plus two walks during his nine innings of work.
Ursinus concludes its season tomorrow, April 27th as they will host McDaniel for a doubleheader starting at 12:00 p.m.
