Baseball Downed by Haverford, 6-2

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – On a cold windy afternoon, the Ursinus College baseball team fell by a 6-2 score against Haverford College in Centennial Conference action on Friday from Thomas Field.

The Fords (11-9, 1-2) snapped the Ursinus (9-12, 2-1) three game winning streak behind strong pitching to record their first CC victory of the season. Haverford jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning before adding two insurance runs in the fifth and seventh innings en route to the 6-2 score.

At the plate, junior Peter Balos paced the Bears lineup finishing 2-for-4 at the plate, while classmates Jordan Williams and Jude Gilhool each finished 1-for-4. Sophomore Kyle Rosenfeld two RBIs behind a 1-for-3 performance at the plate. On the mound for Ursinus, junior lefty David Morgan recorded the start and pitched 4.1 innings allowing four hits and two earned runs. Sophomore Dan Bass relieved Morgan and closed out the contest (4.2 innings) allowing five hits and five hits while collecting three strikeouts.

Haverford capitalized off back-to-back walks in the opening frame to score their first two runs of the contest as Chuck Norton recorded the opening RBI with a single into left field. After the Bears turned a 6-4-3 double play, Haverford scratched across their second run as a passed ball increased the Fords lead to 2-0. Haverford's starting pitcher Riley Grohowski retired the first nine Bears batters to come to the plate as the Bears entered the fourth inning trailing 2-0.

In the bottom half of the frame, first-year Barritt Ross extended his on-base streak to 12 games behind a lead-off walk. Grohowski kept the Bears off the scoreboard as flyout and 1-4-3 double play ended the frame. Haverford received a one-out single and walk before each runner moved into scoring position after a failed pickoff attempt. Bass tallied a strikeout but a single down the left field line scoring two runs, before the inning ended on an infield pop out.

Ursinus answered in the bottom half of the fifth inning scoring two runs to cut their deficit to 4-2. Junior Andrew Richter led off with a walk, before Balos and Gilhool tallied singles to load the bases with one out. After a fielders' choice, Rosenfeld came through with a single through the left side to score the two runs for Ursinus. Next, a great defensive play by Haverford's second basemen stranded two runners on base and kept the Bears deficit at two.

Two runners reached base for the Fords in the sixth inning, but a strike out and a caught stealing double play closed out the frame. Balos and Williams each recorded two-out singles in the sixth inning, but the rally ended there as a flyout closed out the inning. Haverford added two insurance runs in the seventh to stretch their lead to 6-2. Meanwhile, the Fords pitching staff continued to keep the Bears lineup off balance as they retired the final nine batters enroute to the victory. Haverford's Grohowski pitched seven innings allowing five hits, two earned runs, and striking out five batters, while relief pitcher Drew Doyle closed out the final two frames without allowing a hit.

Ursinus will now begin an unforgiving stretch of games as they are scheduled to play five games over the next five days. The Bears return to action tomorrow as they travel to Baltimore, Maryland for a nine-inning contest against No. 15 Johns Hopkins starting at 6 p.m., before squaring off against the Blue Jays on Sunday at noon as well.
