Newman Sends Men's Lacrosse to 12-11 Overtime Win at Haverford

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Senior Eddie Newman scored the game-winning goal in overtime to lift the Ursinus Men's Lacrosse team to a 12-11 win on the road against Haverford on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the Bears improved to 6-5 overall and 2-1 in Centennial Conference play. Meanwhile, the Fords fell to 6-6 overall and 2-2 in conference action.

Senior Scott Sloan opened the scoring at the 10:02-mark of the first quarter off a lengthy possession. Sophomore Harry Sweitzer responded to a Fords goal with one of his own at the 6:02-mark of the first quarter to make it 2-1 and classmate Aidan Kirk followed just under two minutes later to extend the lead to 3-1. Haverford closed the first quarter out with some momentum with back-to-back tallies that tied the score at three. Kirk put the Bears back in front with his second tally of the game at 4-3 before the Fords struck back with two straight goals and took a 5-4 lead into halftime.

Kirk knotted the game up at five at the 12:53-mark of the third quarter and Haverford countered with consecutive tallies once more to go up 7-5 at the 8:40-mark. This time, however, it was the Bears that went on a goal run by scoring three in a row to go up 8-7 with 39 seconds left in the third quarter. Sophomore Barrett Denlinger started the run and assisted Homan for the game-tying goal. Newman cashed in on a man-up situation to complete the run. Haverford opened the fourth quarter with a pair of goals to retake the lead at 9-8 to only be countered by a goal from junior Christopher Pucciarelli that tied the game at nine with 10:19 left in regulation. Haverford immediately took the lead back eight seconds later until Newman answered for the Bears at the 8:08-mark to tie the score once again. Sophomore Nate Groody scored his first collegiate goal just nine seconds later to give Ursinus the lead back in their favor. However, the Fords took advantage of a man-up situation with 2:37 left in regulation to tie the game at 11. Both goalies made key saves down the stretch to force overtime.

In overtime, the Fords won the opening faceoff before a caused turnover by senior Jeff Douglas gave the Bears a chance to possibly win it. The Bears took a timeout following two shots wide of the net which set the stage for Newman to win it at the 1:48-mark from the top after getting a pass from x by Kirk. It was the first overtime win for the Bears since 2021 when they defeated Muhlenberg in double overtime.

The Fords held a slight 49-48 shot advantage for the game and a 31-23 edge in shots on goal. Ursinus held a 48-31 advantage in ground balls and a slight 14-13 edge in faceoff wins. Bears senior goalkeeper Jonathan Singer made 20 saves in a gutsy performance during the whole 60 minutes. Fords goalkeeper Jacob Abraham suffered the loss after making 11 saves in the full game. Kirk and Pucciarelli both finished with four points for the Bears and Newman scored a season-high three goals.

The Bears return to action on Wednesday, April 10th as they will host Muhlenberg at 7:00 p.m.
