Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Offense Powers Men's Soccer Past Medgar Evers, 8-0

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Behind three goals from junior forward Julian Faust, the Ursinus College men's soccer team cruised to an 8-0 victory over Medgar Evers College on Friday evening from Patterson Field.

With the victory, Ursinus moves to 1-0 on the season and marks the second consecutive season in which the Bears have won their season opener. Senior Ben Weir, sophomore Amar Dzombalic, and first-year Teddy Polutta each recorded their first collegiate goals during the victory. Ursinus also capitalized off an own goal and a score from junior midfielder Enver Desic to earn the 8-0 decision.

Senior Joshua Coster and sophomore Aidan McBrearty paced the Bears offense with two assists apiece, while Desic and sophomore Simon Muther each added an assist.

Ursinus struck first at the 6:45-mark of the first half as the Bears capitalized off a turnover, before Faust dribbled past two Cougar defenders and found the back of the net. The Bears maintained much of the possession time before adding back-to-back scores during the 21st and 25th minute to earn a 3-0 advantage. At the 21:28-mark, Coster sent a corner into the box finding Faust whose header snuck past the Cougars defense and into the back of the cage. Ursinus added their third score in the 25th minute as a cross from sophomore Declan Curran deflected off a defender and found the back of the net.

Ursinus recorded six more consecutive shots, before one was deflected and found Desic who assisted Faust for his third goal of the contest. Senior netminder Zach Matik was tested in the 44th minute and denied the scoring opportunity from the Cougars to give Ursinus a 4-0 lead at halftime.

The Bears carried the momentum into the second half as back-to-back goals from Desic and Weir stretched the Ursinus lead to 6-0 during the 51st minute. At the 51:00-mark, Muther recovered a loose ball on the far side of the field before a bouncing past snuck through the defense and found Desic open in the box for the score. Just 21 seconds later, Weir capitalized off a deflected shot and netted his first goal of the season. Ursinus continued to push the pressure in the second half as Polutta and Dzombalic each recorded goals to increase the Bears lead to eight and give the Bears an 8-0 season opening victory.

Matik earned the victory in goal for the Bears collecting two saves over 45 minutes of action, while sophomore Josiah Moore and first-year Tucker Griffin combined for three saves in the second half to give Ursinus a shutout victory. The Bears held a 33-7 advantage in shots and a 16-2 edge in corner kick opportunities.

The Bears will return to action on Sunday, September 1st as they host Penn State Berks for a 3 p.m. start from Patterson Field.
