GALLOWAY, N.J. – The Ursinus Volleyball team was swept in straight sets by Stockton (20-25, 22-25, 19-25) on Tuesday night in non-conference action.
Junior
Mel Eglinton led the team with eight kills while posting six digs. Senior
Caroline Sherman added five kills and classmate
Rachel Bernard tallied 11 assists along with three digs. Junior
Erin Dychdala was one behind Bernard with 10 assists and recorded four digs.
The first set went back and forth to start as neither team was able to pull ahead by more than two points. With Stockton leading 9-8, the Ospreys broke the action by winning five of the next six points to go up 14-9. The Bears responded by taking five of the next seven points to pull within 16-14 to only be responded by a Stockton run that put the Ospreys up 22-16. The Bears won four straight points to cut the deficit down to 22-20 before the Ospreys closed out the first set by taking the final three points.
Ursinus pulled ahead 6-4 in the early portion of the second set until Stockton won six of the next eight points to go up 10-8. The Bears tied the set up at 12 only to have the Ospreys take the lead back with three straight points. Ursinus won six of the next eight points to take an 18-17 advantage and extended their lead to 21-19. However, Stockton won six of the next seven points to go up 2-0 in the match.
Stockton jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the third set before the Bears won six of the next eight points to go up 8-7. After trading points that led to Ursinus going up 11-10, the Bears responded to back-to-back points with three straight of their own to go up 14-12. Ursinus led 15-13 until the Ospreys took control of the set and match by winning seven of the next nine points to go up 20-17. The Bears only got within two points the rest of the way.
The Bears return to action on Friday, September 13th as they will open action at the Neumann Knights Invitational by taking on Widener at 6:00 p.m.
