ROSEMONT, Pa. – The Ursinus College men's soccer team battled throughout but earned a 1-1 draw against Rosemont College on Wednesday evening.
The Bears opened the scoring in the 39th minute, before a second half goal from Rosemont resulted in the first draw of the season for the Bears. Sophomore
Mason Lorah recorded his first collegiate goal during the match, while senior netminder
Zach Matik collected a career-high 13 saves.
Rosemont recorded the first scoring opportunity of the contest during the second minute as a throw in crossed the Bears defense, but the shot from Rosemont's Sean Millelli missed wide right of the goal. The Bears defense fended off a few scoring chances from the Ravens before Lorah connected on a goal during the 39th minute to give Ursinus a 1-0 lead. AJ Torres launched a pass into the box finding Lorah to give Ursinus a one-goal lead. Matik recorded a pair of saves to close out the first half as Ursinus entered the halftime break with a 1-0 lead.
The Ravens regained momentum in the second half as just two minutes into the period, Rosemont's Antonio Amoroso found the equalizer to tie the contest at one apiece. Matik and the Bears defense bounced back by denying a trio of opportunities from the Ravens to keep the game tied with 29 minutes remaining. During the 68th minute, Rosemont's John Dinoto was sent off the field after a red card was handed out allowing the Bears to remain up a man for the final 22 minutes of play. Julian Faust recorded a shot, but his scoring opportunity missed left to keep the contest tied. With under 10 minutes remaining, Matik and the Bears defense fought off a trio of scoring chances from the Ravens resulting in the 1-1 draw for each squad.
The Ravens held a 14-4 advantage in shots on goal with each team earning four corner kick opportunities. Matik tallied a career-high in saves with 13 for the Bears, while Rosemont's Gunner Hoffman collected three saves in 90 minutes of action.
The Bears return to action on Saturday, September 14th as they host Penn State Brandywine for a non-conference matchup starting at 7 p.m.
