CAMDEN, N.J. – Behind an efficient offense, the Ursinus Women's Volleyball team earned a 3-1 (25-21, 20-25, 25-18, 25-18) win over Rutgers-Camden on the road in non-conference action on Tuesday night.
With the win, the Bears improved to 6-3 overall behind their third straight win. Meanwhile, the Scarlet Raptors of the NJAC fell to 3-7.
Senior
Caroline Sherman once again led the team in kills with 13 behind a sizzling .650 hitting percentage. Sophomore
Alonna McCummings recorded six kills on a near-perfect seven attacks while adding three blocks and four players: juniors
Mel Eglinton,
Reena Robinson and
Lexi Couch, plus sophomore
Daejah Bazemore all posted five kills. Senior
Rachel Bernard paced the offense with 16 assists in addition to tallying a team-high 10 digs.
Ursinus came out of the gate red hot in the first half and took a commanding early 10-2 advantage. The Scarlet Raptors began to rally after winning 7-of-9 points while being down 12-4 to make it a 14-11 game. The Bears fended off the rally and stretched its lead back out to six points at 20-14 and did not let the lead fall below three points in the rest of the set. Rutgers-Camden won back-to-back points to stave off set points that made it 24-21 before Couch locked up the set with a kill.
The second set started in reverse of the first set as the Scarlet Raptors started hot and took a 7-2 advantage. Ursinus won five of the next six points to cut the deficit down to 8-7 before winning four of five points that tied the set at 11. However, the Scarlet Raptors won the next four straight points which started a decisive run in the set. Rutgers-Camden extended its lead to 20-14 and they did not allow Ursinus to get within more than three points to level the match at one.
Ursinus bounced back from dropping the first two points of the third set by taking five of the next six points to go up 5-3. After the Scarlet Raptors worked their way back to tie the set at seven, the Bears stormed ahead by winning eight of the next 10 points to take a 15-9 lead. Rutgers-Camden won four straight points to cut the lead down to 15-13, but Ursinus stretched its lead back out to five at 21-16. The Bears locked the set up by winning four of the last six points and went up on the advantage headed into the fourth set.
The Scarlet Raptors got the good start they needed to the fourth set by going up 4-1, but the Bears won six of the next seven points to take a 7-5 lead. The Bears continued to use extended runs to keep control of the set and won five straight points to go up 12-6. Rutgers-Camden had two last runs at the Bears by first making a 13-10 set before getting back within two points at 18-16. Ursinus had answers both times to the runs and closed out the match by winning five of the last seven points.
Ursinus hit a strong .452 as a team behind hitting at least .450 in three of the four sets of the match.
The Bears return to action on Friday, September 20th as they will host Marymount at 6:00 p.m. in non-conference action.
