Women's Soccer Earns Decisive 3-1 Win over Susquehanna

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – A fast start in the first half helped lift the Ursinus Women's Soccer team to a 3-1 win over Susquehanna on Wednesday night at Patterson Field in non-conference action.

With the win, the Bears pushed their unbeaten streak to 5-0-1 which is their best start to a season since they went 6-0 to open the 2005 season. Meanwhile, the River Hawks fell to 3-3-1 on the year.

Ursinus immediately struck to take the early 1-0 lead just 1:02 into the contest after first-year Kaleigh Evans continued her breakout season by scoring after stealing the ball from a defender near the River Hawk net. It was Evans' eighth goal of the season and she extended her Centennial Conference goal lead after scoring in all but one game so far this season. Senior Kayla Harvey stretched the Bears lead to 2-0 in the 18th minute after tapping in an Adriana Careless shot that went off the crossbar. Susquehanna made a late push in the first half and converted off a penalty kick chance in the 43rd minute after a foul in the box.

Junior Paige Flaugh nearly extended the lead in the 49th minute as she sent a shot off the crossbar. First-year Bella Smouse ended up doing the honors of pushing the Bears lead to 3-1 on her first collegiate goal in the 61st minute. Senior Grace Senese sent a corner kick into the box which sophomore Josie Parson headed over to Smouse. Susquehanna was held without a shot in the second half and had a potential second goal waved off in the 74th minute due to an offsides.

Strong defense allowed the Bears to hold a 17-6 total shot advantage for the game and a 9-3 edge in shots on goal. Ursinus also held a 6-1 corner kick advantage with the River Hawks getting their lone attempt with under two minutes left in regulation. Senior goalkeeper Mandy Carideo earned the win for the Bears after making two saves in 90 minutes while Susquehanna goalkeeper Katie Henchy suffered the loss after making six saves.

Ursinus returns to action on Saturday, September 21st as they will open Centennial Conference action against McDaniel at 2:00 p.m.
