COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – An early goal proved to be the difference as the Ursinus College women's soccer team fell 1-0 in their Centennial Conference opening against McDaniel College on Saturday afternoon from Patterson Field.
With the loss, Ursinus falls to 5-1-1 on the season open Centennial Conference play 0-1, while the Green Terror improved to 5-1-1 overall and 1-0 in CC action. The Bears celebrated Alumni Day during the contest and honored 13 alumni at halftime.
McDaniel capitalized on a corner kick opportunity during the opening minute to gain a quick 1-0 advantage at the 1:37-mark. McDaniel's Elaina Kluttz crossed a corner into the box finding the head of teammate Alexis Keller-Posen. Her header trickled through the box finding Jessica Weinoldt who tapped in the loose ball for the opening score. After an offside call on the Green Terror, Ursinus responded with a shot from first-year
Kaleigh Evans, but her shot missed wide to keep the deficit at one. At the 22:30-mark, McDaniel was awarded a free kick opportunity just outside the box, but the Bears defense and senior netminder
Mandy Carideo denied the scoring chance to keep McDaniel off the board. On the back line for Ursinus, senior
Tehya Harvey, sophomores
Maddie Jolie and
Holly Joseph continued to limit the chances for the Green Terror leading to a 1-0 halftime deficit.
The Bears earned the first two threats of the second half as senior
Kayla Harvey and junior
Adriana Careless each recorded shots on goal during the 50th minute. Each chance was saved by the Green Terror netminder, while Ursinus searched for the equalizer. During a corner kick in the 55th minute, Jolie nearly tied the contest at one apiece, but her header missed above the left post to keep the Bears deficit at one. McDaniel tallied the next three chances, but each scoring opportunity missed wide or was denied by the Bears defense. The Green Terror amped up the offensive pressure collecting three of the final chances on goal in route to a 1-0 road victory.
Carideo suffered the loss in goal recording a season-best seven saves, while McDaniel's Lauren Hoolahan collected the victory with three saves. McDaniel held an 8-3 advantage in shots on goal and were awarded 10 corner kick opportunities compared to just two for the Bears.
The Bears will return to action on Wednesday, September 25th as they host Lebanon Valley College for a 4 p.m. start from Patterson Field.
