Penalty Kick Sinks Men's Soccer Against Misericordia

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. -  The Ursinus men's soccer team fell 1-0 to Misericordia University on Tuesday evening, in a non-conference contest at Patterson Field.

The loss dropped the Bears to 3-8-2 overall, while the Cougars improved to 5-5-3 on the season.

The opening minutes were a back-and-forth affair, with each team unable to take advantage of long possessions. Misericordia opened the scoring in the 33rd minute, as midfielder Max Jamieson converted on a penalty kick towards the left corner to put the Cougars up 1-0. The Bears responded with a pair of corner opportunities in the 37th minute with each chance being turned by the Cougars netminder. Juniors Matthew Lohr and Declan Curran each tallied shots over the remaining seven minutes of play, but Ursinus entered halftime still trailing by one.

A crucial opportunity for the Bears was thwarted in the 53rd minute, as Misercirodia's goalkeeper Santino Jonnette made a diving save on a shot by senior Enver Desic. It became a theme throughout the second half, as Ursinus earned 10 second half shot opportunities, including three corners, but the Cougars held strong defensively and held a one goal advantage. A corner opportunity by Misericordia's Corbin Lankford in the 85th minute fell just left of the goal, leading to the Bears looking to spark a comeback. Ursinus earned two free kick opportunities in the final seconds, but were unable to convert either, as the Cougars held on for a win.

The Bears held a 16-10 advantage in shots, and the teams each had four shots on goal. Ursinus earned a 7-4 advantage on corners. Santino Jonnette got the win in goal for the Cougars, with four saves. Junior goalie Josiah Moore took the loss recording three saves.

Ursinus will return to action this Saturday, October 18th for a Centennial Conference road match against Gettysburg College at 7 p.m.
