GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Ursinus women's soccer team battled throughout the contest but settled for a 2-2 draw against Gettysburg College on Saturday afternoon at Clark Field.
With the draw, Ursinus moves to 7-5-3 overall and 2-4-2 in Centennial Conference play. Meanwhile, the Bullets are now 6-5-3 overall and 3-3-1 in conference action. It marks the second straight draw between the two teams after last year's matchup also ended 2-2.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Mallory Toomey led the Bears' defense by recording a career-high 13 saves, surpassing her previous best of 10 against Swarthmore and No. 8 Messiah earlier this season. Sophomores
Emma Woch and
Kaleigh Evans paced the Bears' offense with one goal each. It marked the second straight game with a goal for Woch and the third consecutive contest in which Evans recorded a point.
After the Bears' defense denied the opening shot of the game, Woch gave Ursinus a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute with her fourth goal of the season. Ursinus intercepted a pass in the midfield, and sophomore
Taylor Pezulich created space to find Woch on a through ball. Woch received the pass just inside the box and sent an arching chip shot past the goalie and into the net to give Ursinus the early lead. Gettysburg responded with a trio of shots, but Toomey and the Bears' defense denied each chance to maintain the lead with 15 minutes remaining in the first half. The Bullets broke through in the 42nd minute, scoring on a one-on-one opportunity to send the match into halftime tied at one.
In the 52nd minute, the Bears' defense denied consecutive chances on goal to keep the game level. On a free kick opportunity in the 72nd minute, Ursinus regained the lead behind Evans' third goal of the season. A curling pass found senior
Adriana Careless inside the box. Her header deflected off the post, snuck past a Gettysburg defender, and Evans fired the loose ball into the net to put Ursinus back in front. With 6:27 remaining, Gettysburg capitalized on a corner kick to tie the contest at two. Ursinus initially denied the first shot, but Gettysburg's Kylee Gust corralled a loose ball and found the equalizer. Each team had one final shot on goal, but neither could break the deadlock.
Ursinus returns to action Saturday, October 25th, when they host the University of Mount Saint Vincent at 5 p.m.
