CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The Ursinus College men's soccer team scored a late goal in the second half, but were unable to overcome an early deficit, falling 2-0 against Washington College on Saturday evening at Kibler Field.
With the loss, Ursinus falls to 4-10-2 overall and 1-7 in Centennial Conference play. Meanwhile, Washington College improved to 6-6-5 on the season and 3-1-4 in conference action.
Ursinus tallied the first scoring chance as they were awarded a corner kick within the opening minute. The Bears played a quick pass towards the top of the box, but their shot and ensuing opportunity was denied by the Shoremen's defense. Washington College amped up the offensive pressure, tallying five shots over the next 15 minutes of play, but each opportunity was denied by the Bears defense. The Shoremen capitalized in the 37th minute as a forward was tripped within the box resulting on a penalty kick chance. Tyler Davidson stepped up for the Shoremen and fired a low shot towards the left post to give Washington College an early 1-0 lead. With under five minutes to play in the first half, junior
Matthew McFadden tallied a shot for the Bears, but his chance missed resulting in a 1-0 deficit for Ursinus at halftime.
Washington College extended their lead to 2-0 during the 50th minute, capitalizing off a Bears' turnover. After a pass was intercepted in the midfield, Washington College's Yasir German sent a through ball towards the far post and Tucker Sprano connected for the Shoremen to extend their lead to two. Ursinus responded by firing each of the next three shots, but still faced a two-goal deficit with 35 minutes to play. Enver Desic dribbled into the box before a loose ball found the left foot of McFadden for his team leading fourth goal of the season. The Bears tallied a final shot on goal with under four minutes to play, but eventually fell 2-1.
The Shoremen held a 22-12 lead in shots, an 8-5 edge in shots on goal, while the Bears recorded an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks opportunities. Junior
Josiah Moore suffered the loss in goal behind six saves, while Washington's netminder Hannes Budde collected the victory with four saves.
The Bears return to action on Friday, October 31st as they celebrate Senior Day in a Centennial Conference matchup against Johns Hopkins University at 7 p.m.
