COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Powered by a strong first half, the Ursinus women's soccer team earned a 3-0 shutout victory over Muhlenberg College on Saturday afternoon at Patterson Field.
With the win, Ursinus improved to 6-3-2 overall and 1-2-1 in Centennial Conference play. The Mules fell to 3-7-1 overall and 0-3-0 in the conference. Sophomore
Emma Woch led the Bears' offense with her first career multi-goal performance, scoring twice. Junior
Ellie Frank added an insurance goal, while senior
Paige Flaugh contributed an assist.
Ursinus registered the first two shots of the contest before converting in the seventh minute to take an early 1-0 lead. Woch received a pass just outside the box, slipped past a defender, and fired a shot over the Muhlenberg keeper for her first goal of the season. The Bears' defense turned away two scoring chances in the 13th minute before capitalizing again in the 23rd. After a failed clearance attempt by the Mules, Frank intercepted a pass inside the box and sent a shot that deflected off a defender for her first collegiate goal. Ursinus controlled possession for much of the remainder of the half and took a 2-0 lead into the break.
Riding that momentum, the Bears struck again early in the second half to extend their lead to 3-0. After denying a Muhlenberg scoring chance, Flaugh sent a long through ball to Woch, who broke free behind the defense and finished a one-on-one opportunity for her second goal of the game. Ursinus outshot Muhlenberg 6-3 over the remainder of the second half to secure the win.
The Bears held an 18-14 advantage in total shots, a 9-4 edge in shots on goal, and a 6-3 lead in corner kicks. Sophomore goalkeeper
Mallory Toomey earned the win with her fifth shutout of the season, making four saves. Muhlenberg's Dani Klingener took the loss with six saves over 90 minutes.
Ursinus returns to action Wednesday, October 8th, with a Centennial Conference matchup at Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland.
