Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer Edged by Washington College, 1-0

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Despite a strong defensive effort, the Ursinus women's soccer team fell 1-0 to Washington College on Wednesday evening at Kibler Field.

With the loss, Ursinus dropped to 6-4-2 overall and 1-3-1 in Centennial Conference play. The Shorewomen improved to 7-3-1 overall and 2-2-0 in the conference.

Washington College recorded the first two shots of the contest in the third minute. The first was blocked by the Bears' defense, and the second sailed high. Next, Ursinus earned a corner kick at the 4:51 mark, but the Shorewomen defended it well to keep the match scoreless. Over the next 15 minutes, Washington College ramped up the pressure, registering seven shots. However, sophomore goalkeeper Mallory Toomey and the Bears' defense stood tall, denying each opportunity to keep the contest scoreless. The Shorewomen broke through in the 38th minute with the game's lone goal. After intercepting a pass just outside the box, Washington created a one-on-one chance and converted to take a 1-0 lead.

In the final minutes of the first half, Ursinus generated back-to-back shots in search of an equalizer. A long through ball found senior Kalli Roskos, whose shot was deflected by the Shorewomen's goalkeeper. The rebound landed at the feet of first-year Fiona Sanders, but a Washington defender deflected her shot out of play to preserve the lead. Ursinus continued to press in the second half, producing three more scoring chances but was unable to find the back of the net.

Washington held a 22-6 advantage in shots and a 7-3 edge in shots on goal, while Ursinus led 6-5 in corner kicks. Washington's Olivia Allen earned the win in net with two saves, while Toomey took the loss for Ursinus despite making six saves.

The Bears return to action Saturday, October 11th, when they host No. 15 Swarthmore College at 5 p.m. at Patterson Field.
