Late Surge Sends Women's Basketball Over Delaware Valley

 LANCASTER, Pa. – The Ursinus women's basketball team earned a 60–53 victory over Delaware Valley University on Friday evening to open the Terry Greene Tipoff Tournament.
 
 
With the win, Ursinus improves to 4–2 on the season, while the Aggies fall to 1–3 overall. Senior forward Madison Smith recorded a team-high 16 points and nine rebounds. Classmate Ava Possenti added 14 points, three rebounds and a career-best three blocks. Senior Makenna Foder tallied a team-high five assists, while junior Emma Afflerbach collected a career-high eight rebounds.
 
 
Ursinus struck first at the 8:58 mark as Possenti found Colleen Blackman for a layup to give the Bears a 2–0 lead. Smith followed with a pair of free throws, and Possenti knocked down a jumper at the 7:10 mark to extend the lead to 6–2. Delaware Valley responded with consecutive baskets to tie the game at six before the teams traded buckets and sat even at 10 with 3:34 left in the quarter. The Aggies scored the next three points, but Smith drilled a three-pointer with 24 seconds remaining to tie the game at 13 entering the second period.
 
After trading baskets to start the second quarter, Blackman hit a three-pointer to put Ursinus ahead 18–15 with 8:29 left in the half. The Aggies answered with a basket, but Ursinus responded with a Possenti layup and a free throw from sophomore Ruth O'Keeffe to push the lead to 21–17. Delaware Valley countered with a 6–0 run to move in front 23–21, before Blackman knocked down her second triple for a one-point Bears lead. The Aggies reclaimed a 25–24 advantage at the 2:31 mark, but Blackman scored again to send Ursinus into halftime up 26–25.
 
 
Possenti opened the third quarter with four straight points to extend the lead to 30–25 at the 8:08 mark. Delaware Valley answered with a 9–2 run of their own to take a 34–32 advantage with 6:25 remaining. Next, Possenti tied the game at 34 with her third basket of the quarter, and both defenses then held firm until a Delaware Valley three-pointer with 2:44 left. Ursinus closed the quarter on an 8–4 run to take a 42–41 lead into the fourth.
 
 
The Aggies scored the first basket of the final period, but the Bears answered with an 8–0 run to build a 50–43 lead with 6:24 to play. Smith scored five points during the stretch, while Possenti and Foder combined for three points at the free-throw line. After a Delaware Valley bucket, junior Erin Glanz tallied five straight points to push the lead to 55–45. The Aggies battled back with an 8–2 run, but three consecutive points by sophomore Delaney McCaffrey sealed the 60–53 win.
 
 
Ursinus shot 35.6% (21-for-59) from the floor, 22.2% (4-for-18) from 3-point range and 77.8% (14-for-18) at the free-throw line. Delaware Valley shot 32.8% (22-for-67) from the field, 14.3% (2-for-14) from beyond the arc and 87.5% (7-for-8) at the line. The Aggies were led by Alexis Wright with a game-high 19 points and 13 rebounds, while Whitney Evans added 18 points and four assists.
 
 
The Bears return to action Saturday, taking on Lancaster Bible College at 1 p.m. to close out the tournament.
