Men's Basketball Takes on Goucher

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Ursinus men's basketball team were downed on the road, 76–72, by Goucher College on Tuesday evening.

With the loss, Ursinus moved to 3–2 on the season while the Gophers improved to 1–4 overall. Sophomore Jamie Murphy finished with a team-high 20 points and a career-high 12 rebounds. Senior Nick Nocito added a season-best 17 points and four assists, while sophomore Porter Kelly scored 13 points off the bench and grabbed three rebounds.

Goucher opened the contest with a three-pointer on its first possession, but a triple by junior Luke Nieman and three consecutive free throws by senior Mohamed Toure gave Ursinus an early 6–3 lead. The Bears' defense continued to slow down the Gophers as Murphy and Kelly combined for the next four points to extend the lead to 10–3 with 15:23 remaining in the first half. Goucher responded with a 15–4 run over the next three minutes to take an 18–14 lead with 12:26 left in the half. Both teams pushed the pace as Goucher used a 7–5 stretch to extend the lead to 26–19 with 9:45 to play. After two minutes of scoreless action, the Gophers capitalized on a pair of offensive rebounds to convert a jumper and push the lead to 28–19. Ursinus answered with a steal and basket by first-year Trevor Toulson, and Murphy knocked down two free throws to make it 29–23 with 5:48 left. Goucher closed the half on a 13–11 run, and Ursinus entered halftime trailing 42–34.

Goucher opened the second half with a 6–2 run before a three-pointer by first-year Jasper Buck cut the deficit to 48–39 at the 15:49 mark. After a timeout, Kelly converted a three-point play, and Buck drained his second triple to make it 48–45 with 14:05 remaining. Both teams traded free throws over the next three minutes, with Goucher maintaining a 51–47 lead. The Gophers scored five of the next seven points, and after another two-minute scoring drought, a Kelly free throw cut the deficit to 56–50. Goucher responded with a pair of three-pointers to push the lead to 64–52 with 4:44 remaining before Ursinus mounted a 9–2 run to trim the margin to five with 1:51 left. Nocito added two baskets down the stretch, but the Bears were unable to close the gap and fell 76–72.
