Men's Lacrosse Downed in Overtime by Western Connecticut State

DANBURY, Conn. – The Ursinus Men's Lacrosse team let a late lead slip away as they dropped a 15-14 contest to Western Connecticut State in overtime on Wednesday afternoon.

The Wolves opened the scoring at the 12:40-mark in the first quarter before sophomore Daniel Kupiec answered just over a minute later to tie the game at 1. West Conn State countered with back-to-back goals and responded to a second Kupiec goal and took a 4-2 lead after the first quarter. Kupiec made it 3-for-3 in Ursinus goals at the 13:51-mark of the second quarter to cut the deficit down to 4-3. The Bears tied the game at five following back-to-back goals from juniors Chris Bryant and Aidan Kirk and took their first lead of the game at 7-6 with 2:48 left in the second quarter. Kupiec countered a Wolves goal to tie the game at six and junior Harry Sweitzer delivered the first go-ahead goal for Ursinus. Junior Barrett Denlinger put the Bears up 8-6 to continue the run which they ended up carrying that advantage into halftime.

Kupiec picked up right where he left off to start the second half as he responded to an opening Wolves goal to make it a 9-7 game. Junior Lars Homan stretched the Bears lead to 10-7 at the 11:38-mark before senior Christopher Pucciarelli gave Ursinus its largest lead of the game at 11-7 with 7:05 left in the third quarter. However, the Wolves ran off five straight goals between the third and fourth quarters to take a 12-11 lead with 8:26 left in regulation. West Conn State took advantage of a nearly 15 and a half minute scoreless stretch by the Bears before Denlinger ended the drought with a game-tying goal at the 6:36-mark of the fourth quarter. Denlinger put Ursinus back in front with an unassisted goal at the 4:18-mark before Sweitzer added another with 1:23 left in regulation to make it 14-12. Unfortunately for the Bears, the Wolves ripped off back-to-back goals following ensuing faceoff wins to tie the game and force overtime. The game-winner in the first overtime was scored with 1:14 left.

The Wolves held a 49-36 shot advantage for the game and a 32-24 advantage in shots on goal. West Conn State also held a 38-23 edge in ground balls and a decisive 25-6 edge in face off wins. First-year Bears goalkeeper Colin Daroch made 17 saves in his first collegiate start. Kupiec set a career high with five goals and six points while Denlinger tallied three goals.
