Women's Lacrosse Downed by Stevenson

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Ursinus College women's lacrosse team fell behind early and were unable to overcome the deficit, falling to Stevenson University, 15-6 on Wednesday afternoon from Mustang Stadium.
 

Seniors Julia McCann and Maeve Leonzi paced the Bears lineup with two goals apiece, while sophomore Dana DeSiato added a goal and an assist. Stevenson's Kara Yarusso finished with a game-high five goals with Erin Steinberg adding three goals and an assist for the Mustangs.

 
Stevenson jumped out to an early 2-0 advantage and extended their lead to 4-0 with 6:46 remaining in the first quarter. The Bears recorded scoring opportunities early in the first period, but came empty handed as Stevenson's netminder Regan Torbert tallied three saves through the first seven minutes. Stevenson added their fifth goal at the 4:55-mark, while the Mustangs shutout the Bears through the first stanza and held a 5-0 advantage. The Bears responded in the early parts of the second quarter as Leonzi and DeSiato each tallied goals to cut the Bears deficit to 5-2. At the 13:42-mark, Leonzi was awarded a free position opportunity and capitalized by firing a bouncing shot past the Mustangs defense for the Bears' first goal. Soon after, DeSiato delivered with a bouncing during a free position chance to cut into the Mustangs lead. Stevenson responded by adding three goals over the remainder of the first half and controlled an 8-2 lead at the halftime break.

 
Stevenson carried the momentum into the second half as they capitalized off a women-up opportunity to score the opening goal and stretch their lead to 9-2. Later in the period with Stevenson leading 11-2, McCann added her first goal of the contest at the 3:12-mark to bring the Bears deficit to eight. Junior netminder Susie Miller denied a shot from the Mustangs before McCann split three defenders for the Ursinus score. Stevenson added the final goal of the third period and took a 12-3 lead into the final quarter. McCann and Leonzi each added their second goals to open the fourth quarter, but Stevenson would go on to earn the 15-6 victory.

 
Stevenson held a 31-26 lead in shots, a 10-9 advantage in ground balls, with Ursinus hold a 13-11 edge in draw control. The Bears converted on 83.3% (15-of-18) of their attempts with Stevenson bolstering a clear percentage of 94.4% (17-of-18). In goal, Miller suffered the loss behind 11 saves over 60 minutes of action. For the Mustangs, Torbert collected the victory totaling 12 saves over 50 minutes of play.
 

The Bears return to action on Saturday, March 1st as they host No. 14 The College of New Jersey at noon from Patterson Field.
