Men's Basketball Knocks off Johns Hopkins, 89-79

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Ursinus Men's Basketball team used a complete performance to take down Johns Hopkins 89-79 on Saturday afternoon in Centennial Conference action.

With the win, the Bears improved to 13-8 overall and 6-3 in Centennial Conference action as they earned their first win over the Blue Jays since the 2017-18 season. Ursinus handed Johns Hopkins its first Centennial Conference loss of the season while snapping their nine-game winning streak. The Blue Jays now hold a 14-7 overall record and 8-1 mark in Centennial Conference action.

Senior Trevor Wall led all scorers with 25 points behind going 10-of-17 from the field and a near-perfect 4-of-5 from three-point range. Wall added six steals, four rebounds, and two assists in the win as well. Junior Nick Nocito recorded 20 points behind going 6-of-11 from the field and dished out seven assists plus grabbing six rebounds. Sophomore Luke Nieman came up clutch off the bench with 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting and 3-of-6 from three-point range while Senior Marlin Wise filled up the stat sheet with nine points, seven rebounds, three assists, and three blocks.

The Bears got it working early by taking a 7-3 edge 1:45 into the game and Wall knocked down a pair of three-pointers later to put Ursinus up 13-9 at the 14:54-mark. The Blue Jays countered with six straight points to go up 15-13 at the 12:40-mark to only be answered by eight straight Ursinus points that made it a 21-15 game. Johns Hopkins used an 8-2 burst to tie the game at 23 with 6:29 left in the first half before another answer by the Bears put them back up 27-23 less than a minute later. The Blue Jays used a three-point play that made it 27-26, but Ursinus used a defining 12-4 run that game them their largest lead of the half at 39-30 with 2:19 left in the first half. The Bears got another basket from Wall and held a 42-35 lead at halftime.

Back-to-back baskets to open the second half put the Ursinus lead in double-figures for the first time in the game at 46-35 and they maintained that advantage to 50-39 at the 16:48-mark. Leading 50-42, the Bears shocked the Blue Jays with a 12-4 run that gave them their largest lead of the game at 62-44 with 13:02 left in the second half. Johns Hopkins made a run at the Bears after trailing 65-48 at the 11:02-mark behind 11 straight points that made it a 65-59 game with 8:35 left in regulation. However, Wall fended off the run with timely baskets and a layup from sophomore Matthew Field made it a 72-61 game at the 5:58-mark. Ursinus countered Johns Hopkins baskets and did not let its lead fall into single digits until the Blue Jays cut it to 78-73 with 1:36 left in regulation to make things interesting. However, the Bears went 7-of-8 down the stretch from the free throw line and played strong defense to preserve the win.

Ursinus shot an efficient 51.6 percent (32-of-62) from the field and a sizzling 50 percent (11-of-22) from three-point range. The Bears went 60.9 percent (14-of-23) from the free throw line and forced 15 Blue Jay turnovers.
