Carr Records 100th Career Hit, Softball Splits on Day Four in Florida

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Junior Kayla Carr recorded her 100th career hit as the Ursinus softball team split its day four action down on their Florida Spring Break trip on Wednesday afternoon. The Bears extended their winning streak to seven with an 8-4 win over Skidmore to open the day before seeing it end in an 8-0 setback to UMass-Dartmouth in five innings.
 
 
The Bears record now stands at 7-4 with two games left in the spring break stand.

The Thoroughbreds got a run in the top of the first to take the initial lead on a one-out single following a double in the previous at bat. Ursinus took advantage of a trio of errors to get two runs and took a 2-1 lead after the first inning. However, Skidmore also cashed in on a throwing error in the top of the second as they went back up 3-2 after putting runners on second and third base. Ursinus struck back in the bottom of the fourth as they scored two runs behind three hits and two errors to go up 4-3. Juniors Keelie Hancock and Megan Mills singled before another base hit from senior Samantha Mallen ended up scoring the first run after a throwing error from centerfield. First-year Anna Evanchik grounded out to score the second run. The Bears added to its lead with two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to go up 6-3. First-year Reagan Robinson singled to start the inning and senior Stephanie Wichman doubled her in one batter later. After a bunt from senior Rachel Hartman got Wichman to third, sophomore Miranda McIlvaine singled in Wichman for the second run of the inning. Evanchik tripled with one out in the bottom of the sixth and scored off a double from Carr that made it 7-3. Robinson followed with another double that extended the Bears lead to 8-3. Skidmore added a run with two outs from a single in the top of the seventh before Ursinus closed the game out one batter later.
 
 
UMass Dartmouth 8, Ursinus 0
 
Mallen and Carr singled in the top of the first to put runners on first and second base with one out. However, Robinson hit into a double play to end the threat. The Corsairs scored two runs on four hits and one error in the bottom of the 1st to take the early lead. UMass Dartmouth strung together hits and got their runs off a fielding error on a steal attempt of third base before a double knocked in the second run. The Corsairs added a run in the bottom of the second from a sacrifice fly and broke the game open with five runs in the bottom of the third to go up 8-0. UMass Dartmouth took advantage of a trio of Ursinus errors during the inning and tallied two hits. Ursinus managed just two hits in the last two innings before the run rule was enacted.
 
Carr combined to go 3-for-7 in the doubleheader with an RBI plus run scored and tallied her 100th career hit in the top of the first against UMass Dartmouth. Mallen went a perfect 4-for-4 with a run scored and stolen base against Skidmore before adding another hit and stolen base versus UMass Dartmouth. Robinson went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI against Skidmore while Evanchik went 2-for-3 against the Corsairs. First-year Lucy Wolf earned the win against the Thoroughbreds after tossing six innings of relief and allowed just one earned run on five hits plus striking out three batters.
 
 
 
The Bears return to action on Friday, March 14th as they will wrap up their spring break trip against Bowdoin at 9:00 a.m. and Sage at 11:15 a.m.
