Softball Splits with Bowdoin and Sage on Final Day in Florida

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Ursinus softball team closed out its 2025 Spring Break trip with a split against Bowdoin and Sage. The Bears dropped a low-scoring 3-1 game to the Polar Bears before rallying for a 4-3 win over the Gators at the Fortune Road Athletic Complex.

With the split, the Bears overall record moves to 9-5 overall and completed their week with an 8-2 mark in the Sunshine State. It was the most wins on a spring break trip since the 2006 season when Ursinus went 8-2 in Fort Myers, Florida.

Bowdoin 3, Ursinus 1

Bowdoin opened the scoring in the bottom of the first after getting a single, stolen base, and two base advancement on a sacrifice fly from their leadoff hitter, Anike Ewert. Ursinus got a pair of singles in the top of the second with one out before a pop up and strikeout ended the threat. Junior Kayla Carr led the top of the fourth off with a double and advanced to third on a wild pitch. After the next two Bears were retired, a throwing error kept the inning alive and scored Carr to tie the game at one. Junior Keelie Hancock singled in the next at-bat with a runner on second, but senior Rachel Hartman was called out at home on a questionable call. The Polar Bears responded with a run in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead back at 2-1 before adding another an inning later to give them a 3-1 lead. Ursinus got a pair of walks with two outs in the top of the sixth before a pop up concluded their last best potential threat of the game.

Ursinus 4, Sage 3

The Gators plated two runs in the top of the first after taking advantage of a dropped would-be third out in the outfield to take the early lead. Ursinus responded with a run in the bottom of the first to make it 2-1. First-year Anna Evanchik singled and stole a base and Carr drove her in with a single while advancing to second after an errant relay throw. Carr was tagged out between the basepaths from third to home on a fielder's choice and the Bears stranded a pair of runners to leave the score 2-1 after one. Sage got a run back in the top of the third with a two-out double with a runner on second base to go up 3-1. Ursinus cut the deficit down to 3-2 in the bottom of the third with a two-out rally of their own when senior Stephanie Wichman singled in first-year Reagan Robinson. Sophomore pitcher Miranda McIlvaine worked out of a pair of jams in the top of the fourth and fifth to keep the deficit at one, setting the stage for the Bears to take the lead for good in the bottom half of the fifth. Carr and Robinson singled to start the frame and a sacrifice bunt from Hartman moved the runners over with two outs. Hancock came through with a single through the left side that made it 4-3 Ursinus. Wichman entered the game and worked around a single in each of the last two innings to earn her second save of the season.
Carr went 2-for-4 with an RBI against Sage after tallying a double and RBI against Bowdoin. Robinson went 2-for-4 with two runs scored against Sage while Wichman went 2-for-3 with an RBI. McIlvaine earned the win after allowing three runs (one earned) on seven hits with five strikeouts plus two walks.

The Bears return to action on Thursday, March 20th as they will travel to face Alvernia in a doubleheader starting at 3:00 p.m.
