Softball Takes on Alvernia in Doubleheader Action

READING, Pa. – The Ursinus softball team returned to action for the first time in early a week at Alvernia on Thursday afternoon in non-conference action. The Golden Wolves took both games by scores of 4-3.

In game one, the Bears got a double play to escape and second and third base jam unscathed in the bottom of the first. Junior Kayla Carr got the Bears on the board in the top of the third with a two-run home run with two outs. That lead, however, did not last long as Alvernia tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the third. Each team stranded runners in scoring position in the fifth inning that kept the game tied at two and the score remained that way into extra innings. With a runner on second to start the top of the eighth, a single from Carr moved first-year Anna Evanchik to third before a groundout from first-year Reagan Robinson put Ursinus back in front at 3-2. The Bears had runners on first and third with one out, but a pair of foul outs ended the inning. That proved large when Alvernia tied the game on a sacrifice fly after advancing its runner to third base on a bunt. Ursinus loaded the bases with one out in the top of the ninth before a double play ended the frame and set Alvernia up to end the game in the bottom half of the inning.

Much like the first game, the first two innings went scoreless before Ursinus gained the first lead of the game in the top of the third when senior Stephanie Wichman doubled in Evanchik from second base with two outs. Alvernia kept the similarities going in the bottom half of the inning when they immediately tied the game at one on a sacrifice fly. Alvernia gained its first lead of the day in regulation innings in the bottom of the fourth with a double to make it 2-1. The Golden Wolves held that lead into the top of the seventh inning until Carr roped a two-run double down the right field line to put Ursinus in front, 3-2. However, Alvernia came right back to end the doubleheader with two runs in the bottom half of the seventh.

Carr went a combined 5-of-8 from the plate with four RBI's behind a double and home run. Evanchik totaled three hits and four runs in the doubleheader and senior Samantha Mallen added a combined three hits and one run scored.

The Bears return to action on Saturday, March 22nd as they will travel to face No. 20 Moravian for a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m.
