BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Ursinus College Softball team used a complete performance in game two to earn a split with No. 20 Moravian on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action.
The Bears record moves to 9-8 overall while the Greyhounds now sit at 10-4 overall. It was the first win over a nationally ranked opponent for the Ursinus softball team since they defeated Moravian 2-0 in April 2019 when they were ranked 11th.
In game one, the Bears opened the game with three straight singles to load the bases and a fielder's choice brought in the first run of the game to give Ursinus a 1-0 lead. However, back-to-back strikeouts and a force out at home prevented the Bears from possibly extending their lead. Moravian countered immediately with three runs on three hits in the bottom of the first to take a 3-1 advantage. Ursinus did not advance a runner past second base the rest of the game while the Greyhounds added three more runs to complete a 6-1 win.
Ursinus once again got a run to start the game in the top of the first after junior
Kayla Carr doubled in senior
Samantha Mallen, who singled and stole second base. The Bears broke ahead with three runs on four hits in the top of the third to go up 4-0. Ursinus loaded the bases with one out and a deep ground ball from first-year
Reagan Robinson forced a run in that made it initially 2-0. After a single from senior
Stephanie Wichman loaded the bases again, junior
Keelie Hancock drew a walk to push across the third run and senior
Rachel Hartman singled in the fourth run. Ursinus added three more runs in the top of the fifth behind taking advantage of more walks and an error to make it 7-0. Sophomore
Madyson Hickman became the second Bear to force in a run from a bases loaded walk and junior
Megan Mills ripped a single off the Greyhounds pitcher glove that got across the final two runs. It was all first-year pitcher
Lucy Wolf needed as she twirled a complete game gem by allowing just one earned run on eight hits with three strikeouts and three walks.
Mallen finished the day with a combined three hits, three runs scored, and two stolen bases and Evanchik also recorded three total hits in the doubleheader with a stolen base. Carr added three combined hits, two runs scored, and an RBI while Hartman went 2 for 4 with a RBI in game two. Mills added two RBI's in game two and Robinson had RBI's in each game.
The Bears return to action on Tuesday, March 25th as they will return home to host Immaculata in a non-conference doubleheader starting at 3:00 p.m.
