Seventh Inning Rally Leads Baseball Past SUNY Canton

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Ursinus College baseball team exploded for 11 runs in the seventh inning en route to an 18-3 victory over SUNY Canton on Wednesday evening at Ebbets Field.

The victory marks the Bears' fifth straight in South Carolina as they improved to 9-3 on the season, while the Kangaroos fell to 3-2 overall. It also marks as the Bears' most runs in a game since defeating Pitt. Greensburg, 22-0, in March of 2020.

Sophomore center fielder Barritt Ross paced the Bears' offense, finishing 3-for-3 with three runs scored and three RBI. Senior Peter Balos recorded his third straight multi-hit contest, going 2-for-4 day with three runs scored. Junior Shane Beaver added his first career grand slam and his first home run of the season. Meanwhile, first-year Alex Grehawick earned his first career victory, pitching 4.1 innings, allowing two earned runs, and striking out two batters.

Ursinus jumped out to an early 3-0 advantage in the first inning as they capitalized off two hits and a defensive error. After two quick outs, senior Andrew Ritcher walked and later scored on an RBI single by Balos. Gilhool followed by reaching on an error, and Balos crossed the plate on a wild pitch to give Ursinus a 2-0 lead. The Bears' rally ended when Ross recorded an RBI single into center field, scoring Gilhool and increasing the Bears' lead to three.

Grehawick allowed a pair of base runners in his first two innings of work but recorded ground outs to escape the jam and maintain the Bears' three-run lead. Balos connected on his second base hit to open the third inning and later scored on a two-run home run from Ross. The homer was Ross' second of his career, as he capitalized on a 2-0 pitch to extend the Bears' lead to 5-0. Canton answered with their first of the game in the bottom of the third, as a leadoff double, a wild pitch, and a groundout made the score 5-1.

The Kangaroos added another run in the fifth inning, a pair of hits, and a defensive error cut the Bears' advantage to 5-2. In the sixth inning, Williams reached on a hit-by-pitch and advanced to third on a balk, and a stolen base. Next, Sullivan increased hit hitting streak to 10 games with an RBI single into center field to score Williams and increase the Bears' lead to 6-2. After stealing second, Sullivan crossed the plate on a single from senior Jakob Cantor to make the score 7-2.

Senior pitcher Mike Scheller allowed an unearned run in the Kangaroos half of the inning but stranded two runners on base as a groundout ended the frame. Ursinus exploded in the seventh inning, as 17 batters came to the plate and scored 11 runs, increasing their lead to 18-3. Williams and Cantor each recorded RBI triples in the frame, while Beaver's grand slam capped off the Bears' rally.

Junior pitcher John Hodges came on in the seventh and allowed a base runner but got back-to-back groundouts to end the contest with Ursinus winning 18-3.

The Bears return to action on Friday, March 14th when they take on Wilmington College with first pitch scheduled for 9 a.m. at Griffith Field.
