MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Stellar pitching and timely hits lifted the Ursinus College baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of Wilmington College and Hobart College on Friday afternoon.
The Bears defeated Wilmington College 6-2 on Friday morning, before using a comeback 2-1 victory against Hobart College to earn the sweep. With the victories, Ursinus improves to 11-3 overall and extends its winning streak to seven. Meanwhile, the Quakers now sit at 5-4 overall, and Herons fell to 4-3 on the season.
Game one was highlighted by a complete game performance on the mound from junior pitcher
Dan Bass, leading Ursinus to a 6-2 victory. Meanwhile, the nightcap turned into a pitcher's duel, as first-year
Devin Fogg recorded a walk-off hit in the ninth inning to give Ursinus a 2-1 win.
Ursinus 6, Wilmington College 2
Junior
Shane Beaver and Fogg each led the offense with two hits apiece, while sophomore
Brandon Sullivan extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a base hit and three RBI. On the mound, Bass (2-1) turned a performance to remember, pitching nine innings, allowing just two earned runs, and striking out a career-high 12 batters. It marks the second time in his career that he has pitched nine innings in a contest and surpassed his previous best of nine strikeouts against Rutgers-Camden last season.
The Quakers scored the first run of the contest in the bottom of the first inning, as consecutive doubles with two outs gave Wilmington a 1-0 advantage. Ursinus responded in the second inning, scoring all three of their runs with two outs to regain a 3-1 lead. Beaver led off the frame with a single, before back-to-back strikeouts threatened the Bears' chance. Junior
George Nestor followed with a single, while senior
Jordan Williams loaded the bases via a hit-by-pitch. With two outs and the bases loaded, Sullivan came through with a single to score two runs and give Ursinus a one-run cushion. Senior
Jakob Cantor reached on a hit-by-pitch to load the bases, and senior
Andrew Richter recorded an RBI on a walk to give Ursinus the 3-1 lead.
After a leadoff single from the Quakers to open the second, Bass retired the next 16 batters, before their next base runner reached in the seventh. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Bass cruised through the frame as he struck out the side to keep the Bears' lead at two. In the top of sixth, Ursinus added an insurance run on a one-out sacrifice fly from senior
Peter Balos to give the Bears a 4-1 lead. Williams led off the frame with a base hit and advanced into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt from Sullivan. After a strikeout, Richter was intentionally walked to load the bases for Balos. Ursinus stranded two runners in scoring position as a strikeout ended the threat.
The Bears added to their lead in the seventh inning as sophomore
Barritt Ross led off with a triple and scored on a single from Fogg. After a hit-by-pitch and a sacrifice bunt, Ursinus loaded the bases with just one out. Sullivan recorded his final RBI of the day as a sacrifice bunt scored Fogg from third to give Ursinus a 6-1 lead. Back on the mound, Bass allowed a base runner in the eighth and ninth innings but cruised through the final six outs to give Ursinus a 6-2 victory.
Ursinus 2, Hobart College 1
Senior pitcher
Kieran Hollander got the start in game two for Ursinus and pitched seven innings, allowing six hits and one earned run. Meanwhile, senior
David Morgan (2-0) closed out the final two innings on the mound, recording the victory, and did not allow a hit. At the plate, Cantor and Ross each recorded two base hits apiece, with Fogg earned the walk-off base hit in the ninth.
Hollander allowed a base run in each of the first two inning but responded with a pair of double plays by the Bears' defense to keep the contest tied. The Herons broke through in the third, as a one-out sacrifice fly brought the opening run across the plate to give Hobart a 1-0 lead. Ursinus nearly answered in the bottom half of the inning as Nestor reached third with one out, but back-to-back groundouts ended the threat with Ursinus trailing by one.
In the fifth inning, Hobart tallied back-to-back hits to put runners on the corners with two outs. Hollander escaped the jam as the Heron runner was cut down at the plate trying to steal on a 2-3-1 putout. Hollander exited the contest after the seventh inning, as he retired six of the final seven batters he faced with Ursinus trailing, 1-0.
Morgan entered the contest in the eighth for the Bears and retired the side in order behind a strikeout, pop out, and ground out. The Bears got on the board in the eighth inning, tying the contest at one apiece as a two-out single from Cantor scored Sullivan. After two quick outs, Sullivan recorded an infield single and advanced to second on a stolen base. Next, Cantor faced a 2-1 count but recorded a single down the left field to find the equalizer for the Bears.
In the final inning, Hobart had the go-ahead run reach first on a hit-by-pitch, but a 6-4-3 double play brought Ursinus up to the plate in the final frame. Balos opened the inning with a leadoff walk and would exit the contest as junior
Tyler Dinan came on to pinch run. The Ursinus offense put the pressure on the Herons' defense as back-to-back runners reached on sacrifice bunts to load the bases with no outs. First, Beaver reached base and advanced Dinan into scoring position on a throwing error by Hobart's pitcher. Next, Ross tallied his second base hit on a bunt towards third base to load the bases. Facing a 3-2 count, Fogg came through with the winning hit, a single into right field to score Dinan and give Ursinus the 2-1 victory.
The Bears will close out on their spring break with a contest at 9 a.m. against Cairn University from Polo Grounds Field.
