MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Ursinus College baseball team wrapped up its spring break schedule with a 6-4 victory over Cairn University on Saturday morning at the Polo Grounds.
With the win, Ursinus extends its winning streak to eight games and has now won 12 of its last 13 contests, improving to 12-3 on the season. Meanwhile, the Highlanders of the United East Conference drop to 7-4 overall. Senior
Jordan Williams led the Bears' offense with two runs scored and a base hit, while sophomore
Marco Maiuolo and first-year
Devin Fogg each added a base hit and RBI.
On the mound, junior
Brett Mutz made his second start and fourth appearance of the season. Mutz pitched five innings, allowing four hits, two earned runs, and struck out three batters. Sophomore
Nick Crocona closed out the final four innings, improving to 2-0 on the season, with five hits allowed and two earned runs.
Mutz retired the first seven batters he faced until a one-out single in the third inning by the Highlanders. Cairn capitalized with a walk and a single to score the first run of the contest, but the Bears' defense ended the inning as a 7-2-3 caught a runner trying to advance to third base. In the bottom half of the inning, Ursinus regained a 2-1 lead off to hits and a defensive error. After two quick outs, Williams led off with a single, and a single by Sullivan put two runners in scoring position. Cantor then reached on a throwing error by the Highlanders' shortstop, allowing two runners to come around to score.
Cairn used a pair of singles and a free pass in the fifth inning to score a baserunner and tie the contest at 2-2. With two runners on and two outs, Mutz retired his final batter with a fielders' choice to escape the jam and keep the contest tied. Ursinus once again responded in the bottom half of the inning, as Williams scored on a wild pitch to give the Bears' a 3-2 lead. In the seventh inning, Cairn tied the game again at 3-3 with a lead-off single and a two-out double. During the Bears' chance at the plate, Cantor reached on a defensive error before stealing second base to reach scoring position with two outs. Next, Maiuolo came through with a single into centerfield to score Cantor and put Ursinus back in front, 4-3.
Cairn responded in the eighth inning with a lead-off triple, while a ground out with one out tied the score at four apiece. The Bears took the lead for hood in the bottom half of the inning. After a leadoff walk by sophomore
Barritt Ross, a throwing error from the Highlanders allowed him to advance to third. Fogg came through with an RBI single to give Ursinus a one-run cushion and stole second base with no outs. Junior
George Nestor reached on a sacrifice bunt as a throwing error allowed Fogg to cross the plate and give Ursinus a 6-4 advantage. The Highlanders received a lead off single in the ninth, but a 4-6-3 double play and a ground out closed out game with Ursinus winning, 6-4.
The Bears return to action on Wednesday, March 19th as they host Widener University with first pitch scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
