COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – An extra-inning rally upended the Ursinus College baseball team as they fell 13-8 against Widener University on Wednesday afternoon at Thomas Field.
With the loss, Ursinus falls to 12-4 on the season, snapping their eight-game winning streak. Meanwhile, the Pride improved to 10-7 overall and have won five of their last six contests. Senior
Jude Gilhool paced the Bears offense, finishing 3-for-5 at the plate with two RBI. Sophomore
Brandon Sullivan extended his hitting streak to 14 games and added two RBI, while classmate
Barritt Ross finished 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored.
The Bears' offense broke through in the second inning as they tallied four hits and a walk en route to four runs scored and an early lead. Senior
Peter Balos led off with a walk and advanced into scoring position on a double from Gilhool. Ross followed with an RBI single while first-year
Devin Fogg's bunt single gave Ursinus a 2-0 advantage. After a sacrifice bunt from junior
George Nestor, senior
Jordan Williams and Sullivan each recorded RBIs to extend the Bears lead to four.
First-year
Chase Martin allowed a one-out double in the third inning but recorded a groundout and a punchout to escape the jam and keep the Bears ahead. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Ross and Nestor each reached base with just one out. Unfortunately, a sacrifice bunt and a groundout ended the frame and stranded two runners on base. Widener answered in the fifth inning as they capitalized off three hits and a defensive error to score four runs and tie the score at 4-4. With no outs and the bases loaded, back-to-back doubles from the Pride evened the score. Martin stranded a runner on third as a pair of strikeouts ended the frame.
The Pride regained a 5-4 lead in the seventh inning as a two-out double and an RBI single gave Widener a 5-4 advantage. On the go-ahead single, the Bears defense cut down a Pride runner trying to advance into scoring position on a 9-2-4 putout. Ursinus regained the lead in the bottom of the seventh, as Nestor and Williams both reached on hit-by-pitches. Junior
Tyler Dinan came into the game to pinch run as he and Williams each advanced to scoring position on stolen bases. Next, Sullivan came through with a sacrifice fly to score Dinan and tie the score at 5-5. After a wild pitch allowed Williams to reach third, senior
Jakob Cantor recorded an RBI groundout to give Ursinus a 6-5 lead. Cantor sent a bouncing ball back to the mound, and Williams quickly reacted taking off towards the plate. After the out at first, the throw from the Pride's first baseman was late as Williams dove into the plate safely to give Ursinus a 6-5 advantage. Widener answered with a run of their own in the eighth inning as the contest entered extra innings with the score tied at 6-6. Unfortunately, in extra innings, Widener scored all seven runs with two outs en route to the 13-8 score.
The Bears return to action on Saturday, March 22nd as they host Immaculata University for a doubleheader at Thomas Field with first pitch scheduled for noon.
