COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Highlighted by a late rally in game two, the Ursinus College baseball team earned a doubleheader split against Immaculata University on Saturday afternoon at Thomas Field.
With the split, Ursinus snaps a two-game skid and now sits at 13-5 this season, while the Mighty Macs hold a 4-13 record overall. Sophomore
Brandon Sullivan recorded a base hit in each game, extending his hitting streak to 16 games, and increasing his on-base streak to 22 games dating back to last season. Seniors
Andrew Richter and
Jordan Williams paced the Bears offense in game two by each recording three hits and two runs scored, while combining for four RBI.
Game One: Ursinus 1, Immaculata 7
The Bears added their lone run in the first inning as Sullivan led off with a single, stole second base, and advanced to third on a throwing error. After a strikeout, Richter came through with an RBI groundout to shortstop to give Ursinus the early lead.
Immaculata regained a 2-1 advantage in the third inning, scoring two runs off two hits and a defensive error. With a runner on first and two outs, back-to-back singles scored the opening run while a throwing error gave the Mighty Macs a one-run lead. With one out in the third inning, Sullivan tallied a walk and advanced to third on a pair of stolen bases. Sulivan stole three bags in game one and currently leads the Centennial Conference with 22 stolen bags this year. Unfortunately, two strikeouts with Sullivan in scoring position stranded him on base and kept the Bears deficit at one.
The Mighty Macs increased their lead to three in the fourth inning, when 2024 Ursinus graduate,
Will Kelley collected a two-out two RBI single to make the score 4-1. Immaculata added two more runs in the fifth inning, collecting a pair of base hits and hit-by-pitches to extend their advantage to 6-1. Unfortunately, Immaculata's starting pitcher Alex LePage retired the final 10 batters he faced enroute to a one-hitter and the 7-1 victory for Immaculata. For the Bears, junior pitcher
Max Shilstone shined for the Bears, pitching three innings in relief allowing just one hit.
Game Two: Ursinus 9, Immaculata 6
Senior pitcher
Kieran Hollander got the start in game two and faced the minimum through his first three innings of work. He allowed a one-out single in the second but picked off the runner at first to end the inning.
In the bottom of the second inning, junior
Shane Beaver tallied a single into left field, but back-to-back strikeouts ended the inning with the score tied at zero. Immaculata added their first run in the fourth, capitalizing off a walk, a single, and an error to gain a 1-0 lead. Both pitching staffs continued to keep the opposing offenses off balance, until the Mighty Macs scored five runs in the sixth inning to gain a 6-0 lead.
Ursinus started to battle back in the bottom half of the frame as they cut their deficit in half, scoring three runs to make the score 6-3. Senior
Jakob Cantor led off with a single and advanced into scoring position on a single by Richter. Next, Beaver came through with his second base hit, an RBI double down the left field to give Ursinus their first run. With two outs, sophomore
Barritt Ross came through with a single into left field to score two runs and make the score 6-3.
In the top of the seventh, Immaculata pushed a runner into scoring position, but senior pitcher
David Morgan recorded a strikeout and groundout to escape the jam and keep the Bears deficit at three. In the bottom half of the inning, Ursinus scored three runs off four hits to complete the comeback and tie the score at six apiece. After a strikeout to lead off, Williams recorded a single and advanced to third on another single by Sullivan. Jude Gilhool tied the score at six apiece.
Immaculata put two runners on base in the eighth inning, but senior
Connor Bogansky fanned a pair of batters to strand two runners and keep the score tied. In the bottom half of the eighth, Ursinus took their first lead at 9-6, scoring three runs off two hits, and two walks to gain a three-run advantage. First-year
Devin Fogg led off with a walk and advanced into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by classmate
Nick Mirarchi. A wild pitch advanced Fogg to third base, and an RBI double by Williams gave Ursinus a 7-6 advantage. The Bears closed out the frame with a walk, sacrifice fly, and an RBI single to increase their lead to 9-6. Ross took the mound in the final inning, collected a flyout, groundout, and strikeout to give Ursinus a 9-6 victory and record his second save of the season.
The Bears return to action tomorrow as they travel to Salisbury, Maryland for a non-conference matchup against No. 8 Salisbury University at noon.
