Baseball Edged By No. 8 Salisbury, 6-4

SALISBURY, Md. – The Ursinus College baseball team brought the tying run to the plate but was unable to find the equalizer, falling 6-4 against No. 8 Salisbury University on Sunday afternoon at Williams Stadium.

With the loss, Ursinus falls to 13-6 overall, while the Seagulls improve to 15-4 on the season. Sophomore Brandon Sullivan's 16-game hitting streak came to an end as he finished 0-for-1 at the plate with four walks, extending his on-base streak to 23 games. Seniors Jordan Williams and Jakob Cantor each added a base hit and an RBI. Sullivan currently leads the Centennial Conference with 23 walks this season and 23 stolen bases.

On the mound, junior Brett Mutz (1-2) made his fifth appearance of the season, suffering the loss after allowing three earned runs over three innings of work. First-year Alex Grehawick shined in relief, pitching five innings, allowing one earned run, five hits, and striking out three batters.

Sullivan opened the contest by reaching base via a walk and advanced into scoring position on his 23rd stolen base of the season. Next, Williams came through with an RBI double into left centerfield to give Ursinus a 1-0 lead in the first inning. A strikeout, pick off, and pop-out ended the frame and the Bears' opening chance at the plate.

The Seagulls answered with three runs in the bottom of the first to regain a 3-1 advantage. Salisbury put a pair of runners into scoring position as a single, hit-by-pitch, and wild pitch created a scoring opportunity with no outs. The Seagulls capitalized as a triple and a sacrifice fly brought in three runs before Ursinus escaped the jam. In the second inning, sophomore Barritt Ross opened with an infield single, and a base hit by sophomore Mitchell Garber put two runners on with one out. After a pitching change and a fielder's choice, Cantor delivered a two-out RBI single to score Ross and make the score, 3-2.

Salisbury answered in the bottom of the second, capitalizing off a two-out defensive error to score a run and extend its lead to 4-2. The Bears put a pair of base runners in scoring position in the fifth inning but could not come through with a two-out base hit, as a groundout stranded the tying run on base. The Seagulls answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, recording three straight hits, and benefiting from a Bears' defensive error. Grehawick and the Bears' defense closed out the inning by turning a 6-3 double play and a groundout to strand a runner in scoring position.

In the top of the seventh, Ursinus started a rally with two outs and scored a run to cut the deficit to 6-3. After two quick outs, Cantor led off with a walk and advanced to scoring position on Sullivan's third free pass of the game. Next, Williams reached base on an infield error, and Richter collected an RBI via a hit-by-pitch to score the Bears' lone run of the frame.

Senior Peter Balos led off the eighth inning with a pinch-hit triple down the right field line and later scored on an RBI groundout by junior Tyler Dinan. Trailing 6-4 in their final at-bat, Sullivan reached base again for the Bears, recording his fourth walk of the game. Unfortunately, back-to-back strikeouts ended the contest, with Ursinus falling 6-4.

The Bears return to action on Tuesday, March 25th as they travel to take on Rosemont College at 3:30 p.m.
