COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus softball team was defeated in a Centennial Conference doubleheader by Swarthmore on Thursday afternoon at the Snell Softball Field.
In game one, the Garnet jumped immediately on the Bears with three runs to go up 3-0 in the top of the first inning. Swarthmore added a pair of runs in the top of the second to go up 5-0 behind three hits. The Bears got their first base runner with one out in the bottom of the third when senior
Rachel Hartman reached on an error and classmate
Samantha Mallen singled her in with two outs to make it a 5-1 game. However, Mallen's single proved to be the Bears lone hit of the contest and final base runner as the Garnet added two more runs in the sixth to close out the 7-1 win.
Senior
Stephanie Wichman put the Bears in front in the bottom of the second in game two with her first home run since the 2023 season to make it 1-0. First-year pitcher
Lucy Wolf shut out the Garnet for the first five innings and escaped the fifth inning when classmate
Anna Evanchik threw out the would-be tying run at home plate after a single. Unfortunately for the Bears, a two-run double in the top of the sixth proved to be the decisive hit to ultimately put Swarthmore up for good at 2-1.
Mallen totaled three hits in the doubleheader with two coming in game two while tallying a stolen base in each game. Wolf struck out seven batters while allowing six hits on two earned runs and just one walk in seven innings.
The Bears return to action on Saturday, April 12th as they will travel to face Dickinson for a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m.
