Softball Celebrates Senior Day against No. 8 Salisbury

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus softball team wrapped up its regular season by dropping a pair of games, 5-0 and 8-0, to No. 8 Salisbury on Friday afternoon at the Snell Softball Field in non-conference action.

Prior to the contest, the Bears honored its three seniors: Samantha Mallen, Rachel Hartman, and Stephanie Wichman as a part of senior day ceremonies. Mallen became the first player in Ursinus softball player history to reach the 200-career hit plateau with her single in the bottom of the first inning in game two.

Ursinus and Salisbury went scoreless for the first two innings before the Sea Gulls delivered the decisive blow with four runs off four hits and two runs to go up 4-0. Salisbury scored two runs from a double with a runner on second and a single before a dropped would-be third out allowed the Sea Gulls to add the final two runs. Junior pitcher Christa Andrusiewicz entered in the fourth inning and navigated the Bears through the final four innings and allowed just one run in the seventh inning on four hits with one strikeout plus one walk. The best scoring chance from the Bears came in the bottom of the fifth when they put runners on second and third behind singles from sophomore Madyson Hickman and Mallen, but a ground out ended the threat.

In game two, the Sea Gulls once again did most of its damage in one inning with five runs in the top of the second behind a grand slam to go up 5-0. Salisbury added two runs in the top of the fourth from RBI doubles and a sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth to enact the run rule at 8-0. The Bears scattered four hits in the game and did not advance a runner past second base.

Mallen finished with three total hits in the game with two coming in the first game while swiping two stolen bases to tie the Centennial Conference single-season stolen base record. Junior Kayla Carr hit a double in each game to take over the Bears all-time career doubles mark while first-year Reagan Robinson plus sophomore Madyson Hickman posted hits in each game.

The Bears will await their opponent in the Centennial Conference Tournament next week after this weekend's results. Stay tuned to www.ursinusathletics.com to see where the Bears will start next week.
