COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus softball team was defeated in a pair of contests by No. 17 Gettysburg on Saturday afternoon at the Snell Softball Field.
In game one, junior pitcher
Christa Andrusiewicz went toe-to-toe with Gettysburg's Paige Forry, who entered the day leading NCAA Division III in wins, second in strikeouts, and 10th in ERA for the first two innings as one base runner reached between the two teams. However, with two outs in the top of the third, the Bullets got their first hit off a triple and scored the game's first run on a fielding error in right field. Ursinus got its first two runners on base in the bottom of the third with a hit by pitch and walk but a force out at second ended the potential threat. Gettysburg added a second run in the top of the sixth on a two-out RBI single. Senior
Samantha Mallen got the Bears first hit of the game with one out in the top of the sixth and stole second base. A throwing error moved Mallen to third and she came around to score two batters later off a groundout from first-year
Reagan Robinson that made it 2-1. Ursinus had runners on second and third with two outs before a fly out ended the inning. Gettysburg added an insurance run in the top of the seventh on a two-out fielding error that made it 3-1 and retired the Bears in order during of the bottom of the seventh to end the game.
Gettysburg ripped off seven runs in the top of the first of game two behind three hits, two walks, and one error to go up 7-0. The Bears got two runs back in the bottom of the first to make it 7-2 as Robinson singled in classmate
Anna Evanchik and senior
Stephanie Wichman singled one at-bat later, which scored Robinson. Gettysburg added two runs in the top of the fourth with two outs to extend the lead to 9-2 and enacted the run rule with a two-run home run in the top of the fifth that made it 11-2.
Mallen had a hit in each game and stole three bases to eclipse the 100-career stolen base plateau. Robinson had hits in each game as well and RBI's in each game.
The Bears return to action on Tuesday, April 8th as they will host Swarthmore for a doubleheader starting at 3:00 p.m.
