Game Recap: Field Hockey |

No. 18 Field Hockey Outlasts No. 20 Ithaca 2-1 in Home Opener

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The No. 18 Ursinus Field Hockey team bounced back and won a highly-competitive 2-1 contest over No. 20 Ithaca on a beautiful Sunday afternoon at Snell Field in non-conference action.

With the win the Bears leveled their record to 1-1 and avenged their loss to the Bombers last season that came in penalty strokes. Meanwhile Ithaca drops to 1-1.

The Bears had some chances in the early portion of the first quarter but were unable to convert in the first 10 minutes. The Bombers struck first on their first shot of the game in the ninth minute to take a 1-0 advantage. Ithaca had two more decent looks to try and extend their lead, but both were turned away by Bears senior goalkeeper Adriana Palladinetti. Ursinus tied the game just 1:50 into the second quarter when senior Rachel Buono snuck one past the Bombers goalkeeper following a penalty corner. Junior Kirsten Johnson nearly gave the Bears the lead in the 23rd minute when she got out front of the cage, but had back-to-back shots turned away.

Ursinus once again used a penalty corner to its advantage in the 36th minute when Johnson tapped in a pass from classmate Marie Brainard to give the Bears a 2-1 lead. The Bears had a pair of chances stopped later in the third quarter that also came following a penalty corner. Ithaca sent a shot just high of the cage in the 50th minute and had another shot sent wide with just over three minutes left in regulation. Ursinus locked it down on defense and preserved the win by not allowing a shot on goal in the final minutes.

Ithaca held a slight 14-13 edge in shot while the Bears held a slight 7-6 advantage in shots on goal. Ursinus also held a 10-8 advantage in penalty corners. Palladinetti earned the win for the Bears after making five saves in the full 60 minutes while Maeve Clark suffered the loss after making five saves in the full time. Brainard assisted on both goals while Buono and Johnson netted their first goals of the season.

The Bears return to action on Saturday, September 6th as they will host William Smith at 12:00 p.m.
