Men's Soccer Takes Down Gwynedd Mercy, 3-1

GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – The Ursinus Men's Soccer team picked up its first win of the season as they defeated Gwynedd Mercy 3-1 on the road Friday night in non-conference action.

With the win, the Bears improved to 1-2-1 overall while the Griffins fell to 1-4 overall.

First-year Nicholas Grippa scored on the Bears first shot of the game in the seventh minute of the game to make it 1-0. Senior Colin Deal stopped a pass into the box and tapped it to first-year Sean McFadden who sent it to Grippa open in front of the net. Grippa nearly scored again in the 15th minute as he had a shot saved. Ursinus had multiple chances in the last 10 minutes to possibly extend their lead but had a pair of shots saved.

Junior Luke Hansen converted the Bears first shot on goal in the 63rd minute of the second half to extend the Ursinus lead to 2-0. Junior Matthew Lohr had a shot then ring off the post just over a minute later to keep the game at 2-0. The Griffins got on the board in the 88th minute on a penalty kick after a foul in the box but Ursinus added one more goal for good measure as senior Marko Balic beat the horn with 1.6 seconds left to make it 3-1.

The Bears held a 20-14 shot advantage for the game and a slight 8-6 advantage in shots on goal. Corner kicks were even at six. First-year goalkeeper Jaden Ottley earned the win in his first collegiate start after making five saves in the full 90 minutes. Ethan Zimmerman suffered the loss for the Griffins after also making five saves in the full time.

The Bears return to action on Tuesday, September 16th as they will travel to face Eastern at 3:30 p.m.
