Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Evans Goal Lifts Women's Soccer to 2-1 win over Gwynedd Mercy

GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – Sophomore Kaleigh Evans tallied a goal with just over 12 minutes left in the second half to send the Ursinus Women's Soccer team to a 2-1 win over Gwynedd Mercy on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action.

With the win, the Bears improved to 4-1 overall after completing a 2-0 week while the Griffins fell to 2-4 overall.

Ursinus had some early chances as Evans had a shot saved two minutes into the game before a header off a corner kick went wide. Junior Sophia Cooper finally broke through for the Bears with a goal in the 24th minute after getting a one touch feed up the middle from classmate Ellie Frank that made it 1-0. Cooper nearly extended the Bears lead in the 39th minute before having a shot saved.

Frank and Evans had back-to-back shots turned away in the opening minutes of the second half as the Bears continued to control play. Ursinus put three more shots on the Griffins net between the 56th and 57th minutes but had all three saved that kept the game at 1-0. Gwynedd Mercy took advantage of a corner kick in the 69th minute and tied the game at one. Sophomore Emma Woch rang a shot off the post in the 71st minute but Evans delivered the eventual game-winner six minutes later after first-year Abby Godown threaded the needle with a ball through two defenders.

The Bears held a sizable 26-8 shot advantage for the game and a 12-3 edge in shots on goal. Ursinus held a slight 5-4 edge in corner kicks. Sophomore goalkeeper Mallory Toomey made a pair of saves in 90 minutes to earn the win while Natalie Gablein and Madisson Ronn split 45 minutes for the Griffins.

Ursinus returns to action on Wednesday, September 17th as they will host Elizabethtown in non-conference action at 7:30 p.m.
