Volleyball Sweeps Cedar Crest and Goucher in Home Tri-Match

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus Women's Volleyball team celebrated its senior day tri-match with straight set sweeps of Cedar Crest (25-16. 25-15, 25-19) and Goucher (25-22, 25-13, 25-14) on Saturday at Helfferich Hall in non-conference action.
 
 
With the sweep, the Bears improved to 4-6 overall as they celebrated their six senior student-athletes: Zoe George, Mel Eglinton, Erin Dychdala, Lexi Couch, Maci Dobbins-Timochenko, and Reena Robinson. Cedar Crest moved to 1-13 overall after sweeping Goucher in the middle match while the Gophers fell to 5-6 overall.
 
 
Ursinus 3, Cedar Crest 0
 
The Bears and Falcons traded points early as neither team was able to get a lead larger than two points after 20 rallies. Ursinus finally broke through with four straight points after the set was tied at nine to go up 13-9 behind a pair of aces from Dychdala. Cedar Crest won three out of four points to pull within one at 14-13 before the Bears won six of the next seven points to go up 20-14. Ursinus won five of the final six points after a Falcons point to close out the first set.
 
 
Ursinus hit the gas to start the second set by taking the first four points and extended their advantage to 8-2. The Bears stretched their lead to 12-4 following three straight points and maintained their healthy lead out to 15-8. Ursinus put the set away by winning eight of nine points to go up 24-12 after Cedar Crest cut the deficit to 16-11. Sophomore Marissa Ortiz ended the set with a kill following three straight Falcons points.
 
 
The third set followed a similar start to the first set with back-and-forth action until the Bears blew things open with nine straight points to go up 16-8 after trailing 8-7. Cedar Crest rallied with five straight points to make it a 16-13 game to only be answered by four straight Ursinus points that made it 20-13. Ursinus built a 23-14 advantage and fended off Cedar Crest winning five of six points when Eglinton got a kill to end the match.  
 
Couch led the way with 11 kills on a .391 hitting percentage while adding two digs and a block. George posted seven kills and three digs while Eglinton and first-year Lauren McGinn tallied six kills apiece. McGinn recorded 12 digs and Dychdala posted 19 assists, six digs, plus three kills.
 

Ursinus 3, Goucher 0
 
The Bears broke off seven straight points after trailing 4-2 to go up 9-4 behind six straight aces from McGinn. Ursinus worked its lead out to 11-7 before the Gophers won six of the next eight points to tie the set at 13. Ursinus won four of the next six points to go up 17-15, but Goucher won three straight points to go up 18-17. The Bears won back-to-back points to go up 19-18 until they were answered by three straight Goucher points that made it 21-19. Ursinus staved off a resilient battle by the Gophers by winning six of the last seven points to win the first set.
 
 
Ursinus started fast in the second set as they won five straight points after the score was tied at two before eventually extending their lead to 11-4. Ursinus responded to a trio of Goucher points with four straight of their own to extend their lead to 15-7 and broke the set open by taking six of the next seven points to go up 22-11 after the score was at 16-10. The Bears then closed the set out with three straight points.
 
 
Goucher led 4-3 early in the third set before the Bears stormed ahead by winning seven of the next eight points to go up 10-5. The Bears extended their lead out to 14-8 and delivered the knockout punch with 10 straight points to go up 24-10 after Goucher made it 14-10. First-year Chloe Kamp ended a run of four straight Gopher points with a kill.
 
 
Couch once again led the way with 11 kills on a sizzling .529 hitting percentage and McGinn added eight kills, six aces, plus two digs. Dychdala paced the offense with 14 assists while posting six digs.
 
 
The Bears return to action on Thursday, September 25th as they will host Rutgers-Camden at 7:00 p.m.
