Field Hockey Downed in Overtime by Swarthmore

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus Field Hockey team let a first half lead slip away as they lost 3-2 in overtime to Swarthmore in Centennial Conference action at Snell Field on Tuesday night.

After a scoreless first quarter, junior Ava Mikulski got the Bears on the board with a goal 59 seconds into the quarter. A shot went wide on a corner for the Bears in the 24th minute before Mikulski struck again in the 26th minute to extend the Bears lead to 2-0. Swarthmore made a late push in the quarter with three shots on net in a two-minute span that were all saved. Junior Kirsten Johnson nearly added another goal with a chance in front of the cage in the 28th minute that were both saved.

Swarthmore began turning the tide of the game by controlling the possession in the third quarter and beginning to get pressure on the Bears net. The pressure paid off in the 41st minute when they converted on a penalty corner to make it 2-1. Swarthmore then tied it three minutes into the fourth quarter. Each team had chances later in the period with a pair of Garnet shots being saved and a Bears shot being blocked. In overtime, Swarthmore had all four shots and scored the winner with 29 seconds left in the first overtime period.

The Garnet held a 22-10 advantage in shots and an 11-4 advantage in shots on goal. Swarthmore also held an 8-4 edge in penalty corners as well. Senior Bears goalkeeper Adrianna Palladinetti made eight saves in the full time while Garnet goalkeeper Cassandra Conklin made two.
