COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Behind an all-around effort, The Ursinus women's basketball team mounted a second half comeback against Haverford College, earning an 83-73 victory inside Helfferich Hall.
The Bears improved to 10-5 on the season and 4-1 in Centennial Conference play. Meanwhile, the Fords fell to 9-6 on the year and drop to 1-4 in conference action. The victory marked the Bears fourth straight of the year and seventh in a row against Haverford.
Senior forward
Madison Smith led the Bears in scoring with 15 points, along with seven rebounds and three assists. Senior guard
Ava Possenti finished with 12 points, along with four steals. Junior
Erin Glanz hit a season-high three 3-pointers, on the way to 11 points and three assists.
The game started as a back-and-forth affair, before the Fords were able to put together a 10-0 run, putting them up nine with 2:35 left in the first quarter. Ursinus responded with a 10-3 run of their own, highlighted by key threes from junior
Colleen Blackman and first-year
Olivia Nardi.
Trailing 22-20 entering the second stanza, both teams battled, but consecutive three-pointers by the Fords gave them a 30-25 advantage at the 7:26-mark. Ursinus answered with a triple from Glanz and a layup by first-year
Anna Chimento tie the contest at 30. The Fords closed out the first half on an 11-5 run and held a 41-35 lead at the halftime break.
Ursinus found their footing in the third quarter, sparked by the Bears' frontcourt. Baskets by Smith and sophomore Ruth O'Keefe helped the Bears take their first lead of the game since early in the first quarter, at 48-46 with 4:33 remaining in the period. The Bears closed the quarter by converting on three-point plays at the line by and took a 56-54 lead into the final period.
A cold start to the fourth quarter for the Bears allowed Haverford to retake the lead early, at 65-60. However, baskets by Possenti, senior
Makenna Foder, and Blackman cut the deficit to 67-66 with 3:41 to play. With the momentum, Chimento converting yet another "and-one" opportunity to give the Bears back the lead. Leading 72-69 with 1:54-remaining in the contest, sophomore Delaney McCaffrey converted on a triple to extend the Bears lead to six. Ursinus closed out the game at the line going 10-for-10, to seal the 83-73 victory.
Ursinus shot 38% from the field (27-of-71), 33.3% from 3-point range(9-of-27), and 90.9% from the free throw line(20-of-22). The Bears held a 46-32 lead in rebounds and converted 23 points off 14 Ford turnovers. Haverford shot 41.7% from the field(25-of-60), 42.9% from 3-point range(9-of-21), and 100% from the free throw line(14-of-14). Haverford's Audrey Jakway finished with a game-high 33 points and nine rebounds.
Ursinus will return to action on Saturday, January 17th, as they travel to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania for a conference matchup with the Gettysburg Bullets. The game will begin at 1:00 P.M.
