LANCASTER, Pa. – Following an impressive performance at the Will Abele Invitational, Ursinus men's wrestling junior
Mohamed Abdelatty has been named the Centennial Conference Athlete of the Week, as announced by the conference Tuesday morning.
Abdelatty led Ursinus to the team title at the Will Abele Invitational with a perfect 5-0 record, as all five of his victories came by fall or technical fall. He opened the tournament with a pin at the 1:02 mark over Alfred State's Colton Hal, then advanced to the quarterfinals with a 27-second pin against Nassau's Ernesto Cordova. Abdelatty followed with another pin at the 1:04 mark in the quarterfinals, recorded a 16-1 technical fall in the semifinals, and capped the day by defeating Norwich's Rory Nolan, 17-2, by technical fall to win the 285-pound bracket.
The Lawrence, New Jersey, native owns a 17-1 record this season and ranks fourth on the team with 10 falls. He is currently ranked 11th in the nation by the National Wrestling Coaches Association. This marks the second time this season and the third time in his career that Abdelatty has earned the conference's weekly honor. It is the fifth such award for Ursinus this season, with classmates
Andrew Schaen and
Braden Kmak previously earning the distinction.
The Bears return to action Thursday, Jan. 22, when they travel to Kings Point, New York, for a Centennial Conference dual against the United States Merchant Marine Academy.
