Men's Wrestling Defeats Johns Hopkins on Senior Day

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa.
– The Ursinus men's wrestling team won eight of the 10 bouts en route to a 34-9 victory over Johns Hopkins on Wednesday evening.

 
With the victory, Ursinus improves to 8-2 on the season and 2-0 in Centennial Conference action. Meanwhile, the Blue Jays fall to 1-9 overall and 0-2 in conference play. The victory extends the Bears' Centennial Conference dual meet winning streak to 19 and their sixth straight win over the Blue Jays.

 
The Bears celebrated eight seniors prior to the meet as Michael Adams, Anthony Cerulli, Derek Giordano, Gabriel Heaney, Teague McCormack, Andrew Minko, Jacob Sheiner, and Nils Updale were recognized for their dedication and commitment to the men's wrestling program over the last four years.
 

Ursinus jumped out to an early 10-0 lead through the first two bouts as Adams received a forfeit at 125-pounds and sophomore Blaise Verdino earned a 15-1 major decision at 133-pounds. Next, junior Andrew Schaen secured an 8-1 decision at 141 over Max Aspel to give Ursinus a 13-0 dual lead.

 
Johns Hopkins recorded a technical fall at 149 and a major decision at 165, but junior Braden Kmak secured a 12-6 decision over Giorgio Difalco at 157 to give Ursinus a 16-9 lead with four matches remaining. Next, Cerulli collected an 8-3 decision at 174, while Updale increased the Bears advantage to 23-9 at 184-pounds, earning a 12-2 major decision over Kadin Khalloufi.

 
Junior Sean Cowan recorded the lone fall of the day, pinning Charles Dunn at the 2:08-mark of the first period to increase the Bears lead to 29-9 entering the final bout. No. 11 Junior Mohamed Abdelatty improved to 19-1 on the season, increasing his winning streak to 19 matches by earning a 17-2 technical fall over Jake Pomykata to give Ursinus the 34-9 victory.
 
 
The Bears return to action on Saturday, January 31st as they travel to McDaniel College for a tri-match against the Green Terror and Gettysburg College starting at noon.
