Baseball Rallies past Misericordia, 8-5

NEWARK, Del. – A four-run third inning and a three-run eighth lifted the Ursinus baseball team past Misericordia, 8-5, on Saturday afternoon at the University of Delaware's Bob Hannah Stadium.

With the victory, Ursinus split the season series with Misericordia and improved to 1-1 overall. Meanwhile, the Cougars fell to 1-3. Junior Brandon Sullivan paced the Bears' offense from the leadoff spot, finishing 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored. Junior Isaac Gesford led Ursinus with three RBIs, while sophomore Devin Fogg and first-year Jamie O'Neill added two hits apiece.

On the mound, sophomore Chase Martin made his first start of the season and pitched four innings, allowing three hits and one earned run. Sophomore Alex Grehawick earned the win out of the bullpen, tossing four innings and scattering two hits and two runs while striking out three. First-year Brett Barrett closed out the contest, pitching the ninth inning.

Misericordia grabbed the game's first lead in the second inning as a pair of hits and a groundout produced a run. Ursinus quickly answered in the top of the third, scoring four runs to take a three-run advantage. Senior Kyle Rosenfeld led off the inning with a hit-by-pitch and later scored on a double by Sullivan. Sophomore Luke Kopec followed with a single, and a groundout allowed Sullivan to score to give Ursinus a 2-1 lead. After a walk by Barrett and a single from Fogg, sophomore Matthew Callahan delivered a two-run single to right field to extend the lead to 4-1. A strikeout ended the inning with two Bears stranded.

Misericordia added a run in the bottom of the third, but Martin retired the Cougars in order in the fourth and exited with Ursinus leading 4-2. In the fifth, Ursinus extended its lead to 5-2 on a two-out RBI double by O'Neill. Fogg started the rally with a single and moved into scoring position with a stolen base.

Grehawick kept Misericordia's lineup off balance until the Cougars trimmed the deficit to 5-4 with two runs in the seventh. Ursinus responded with three runs in the eighth to push the lead to 8-4. O'Neill led off with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior George Nestor. Following a wild pitch, Rosenfeld singled to score O'Neill and make it 6-4. Sullivan recorded his second extra-base hit of the game, and an intentional walk loaded the bases with one out. Gesford delivered a two-run single to right field, scoring Rosenfeld and Sullivan to extend the advantage to four runs.

Grehawick retired the side in order in the eighth, and Barrett allowed an unearned run in the ninth before sealing the 8-5 victory.

The Bears return to action Friday, February 27, when they open a three-game series against DeSales University.
