Baseball Swept by DeSales

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Ursinus baseball team dropped a doubleheader to DeSales University, 2-1 and 7-3, on Friday evening at Wilkes University.
With the losses, Ursinus falls to 1-3 on the season, while DeSales improves to 3-3.

Game One: DeSales 2, Ursinus 1 (7 innings)

The Bears struck first in the opening inning, but DeSales evened the score in the fourth and added the go-ahead run in the fifth to secure the 2-1 victory in seven innings.
Junior Brandon Sullivan led off the game with a single to center field, and sophomore Isaac Gesford followed with a single to put two on with one out. First-year Brett Barrett then loaded the bases with a single. After a strikeout, first-year Jamie O'Neill drove in Sullivan from third with a single up the middle. A strong relay throw from center field cut down the trailing runner at the plate to end the inning.

Senior Dan Bass made his second start of the season and cruised through the first three innings, facing the minimum. After issuing a leadoff walk in the second, Bass induced a 4-6-3 double play and recorded a line out to end the frame.

Ursinus loaded the bases with one out in the third but saw the threat end on a 6-4-3 double play, maintaining a 1-0 lead. DeSales tied the game in the fourth on a one-out double. With two runners on, Bass recorded a strikeout and a ground out to strand both runners and keep the game tied.

The Bulldogs took a 2-1 lead in the fifth on a sacrifice fly. After two singles put runners on the corners with no outs, a failed bunt attempt was followed by the go-ahead sacrifice fly to right field.

The Bears threatened in the sixth as Barrett led off with an infield single. Following a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Devin Fogg and a walk by sophomore Matthew Callahan, Ursinus had two runners on with two outs. A strikeout ended the inning, and a 4-6-3 double play in the seventh sealed the 2-1 defeat.

Game Two: DeSales 7, Ursinus 3

Sullivan sparked the offense in the nightcap with a leadoff triple down the right-field line. Sophomore Luke Kopec followed with an RBI groundout to give Ursinus a 1-0 lead.
DeSales responded with three runs in the bottom of the first to take a 3-1 advantage. The Bulldogs opened the inning with back-to-back doubles, and a two-out single to center plated two runs.

In the second, O'Neill drew a leadoff walk and advanced to third on a passed ball and a wild pitch. However, two strikeouts and a flyout ended the threat. DeSales added another run in the inning to extend its lead to 4-1.

Ursinus answered in the third. Sullivan recorded a leadoff double — his second extra-base hit of the game — and scored on an RBI single by Barrett to cut the deficit to 4-2.
The Bulldogs added runs in the third, sixth and seventh innings to build a 7-2 lead. Ursinus plated a run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by first-year Nolan Carroll but ultimately fell, 7-3.

The Bears return to action Saturday when they host DeSales for a doubleheader at Perkiomen Valley High School. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
