COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus softball team earned a sweep over Alvernia in their home opening non-conference doubleheader on a beautiful Tuesday afternoon at the Snell Softball Field. The Bears won game one 1-0 before rolling 8-1 in game two.
In their first games since February 21st, the Bears leveled their record to 2-2 before they start their Spring Break trip down in Florida this weekend. Meanwhile, the Golden Wolves fell to 5-7 overall.
Game 1:
After a 1-2-3 top of the first, the Bears got the only run they needed when first-year
Tierney Stuempfle hit a two-out RBI single up the middle. Sophomore
Anna Evanchik led the inning off with a walk but was thrown out at home trying to score off a double from first-year
Nina Davidson. Davidson advanced to third on the throw home and scored off Stuempfle's single. The Golden Wolves had their best chance to score in the top of the fourth when they loaded the bases with one out. However, Davidson threw home in the next at-bat to get a force at home before a pop up ended the threat. Ursinus got runners on second and third with one out in the bottom of the fourth, but Alvernia worked out of it with a diving catch on a lineout and doubled up the runner at third base. The Golden Wolves were unable to push any one of their three runners in the last three innings past second base and the Bears held on for the win.
Game 2:
A two-out RBI single in the top of the second inning gave Alvernia their first and only lead of the doubleheader at 1-0 after the inning was kept alive following a dropped pop up. The Bears took command of the game in the bottom of the sixth with six runs on five hits and one error to go up 6-1. Evanchik led the inning off with a single and stole second base. Senior
Kayla Carr doubled her in to tie the game two batters later and classmate
Christa Andrusiewicz singled her in with two outs to give the Bears a 2-1 lead. Senior
Keelie Hancock doubled in a pair of runs after a walk from sophomore
Reagan Robinson and came around to score on a throwing error from the Alvernia pitcher. First-year
Maddie Rea capped the inning with an RBI single. The Bears added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to go up 8-1 and they kept Alvernia off the board the rest of the way. Senior
Riley Coneeny led the inning off with a double and scored on a throwing error to first after Evanchik bunted. Evanchik stole second and came around to score on a single from Davidson.
Davidson went a combined 5-for-6 in the doubleheader behind going 3-for-3 in game one with a run scored in game one and an RBI in game two. Stuempfle had a hit in each game and the lone RBI in game one and Hancock went 1-for-3 with two RBI's and a run scored in game two. Andrusiewicz tossed a complete game shutout in game one after allowing five hits with five strikeouts and two walks while going 2-for-4 with an RBI from the plate in game two. Sophomore
Lucy Wolf earned the win in game two with allowing just two hits and one unearned run in five innings with four strikeouts and a walk. Sophomore pitcher
Lily McGrath closed the game out with two shutout innings.
