Softball Begins Florida Spring Break Trip

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Ursinus softball team opened their 2026 Florida Spring Break trip with losses to UMass-Dartmouth and Southern Maine on Saturday afternoon.

The Bears opened the day against the Corsairs and took a 2-0 lead right off the jump in the top of the first when senior Kayla Carr crushed a two-run home run to left centerfield. The Corsairs responded in the bottom of the third by tying the game at two with a pair of two-out RBI's. With runners on first and second, a single up the middle got the first run home before back-to-back hit by pitches tied the game. Carr gave the Bears the lead back at 3-2 with a solo home run to lead off the top of the fourth inning but the lead was short-lived as the Corsairs tied the game in the bottom of the fourth with a two-out double after getting a runner to second base. UMass Dartmouth took the lead for good at 5-3 in the bottom of the fifth inning with two runs on two hits and strong baserunning. A pair of singles led off the inning and put runners on first and third. The Corsairs executed a successful double steal during the next at-bat to get in the first run and advanced the runner on second to third on the throw home. A groundout two batters later brought in the second run. Ursinus had runners on first and second with two outs in the top of the sixth before a strikeout ended the frame. The Bears went 1-2-3 in the seventh to end the game.

Ursinus once again had a fast start in the second game of the day with Southern Maine as they scored five runs on just two hits to go up 5-0 in the bottom of the first. Sophomore Anna Evanchik walked and stole a pair of bases to get to third base. With two outs, first-year Tierney Stuempfle walked and senior Christa Andrusiewicz hit a single to bring in the first run. Back-to-back walks pushed in the second run and two more runs were scored on a fielder's choice when senior Keelie Hancock beat a force out throw to second base with both runners already in motion. First-year Maddie Rea snuck a single through the right side to bring in the fifth run. Ursinus seemed poised to add to its lead in the bottom of the second when the first two runners reached but Evanchik was tagged out at home trying to score on a ground ball from Carr. The Bears still loaded the bases with one out after Stuempfle singled, but Carr was called for leaving early for the second out and a strikeout ultimately ended the threat. The Huskies responded with five runs of their own on four hits and one error to tie the game. Southern Maine put runners on first and second with one out following a single and catcher's interference. Ursinus got a second out and the Huskies strung together three singles and a walk to bring in all five runs with two outs. After the Bears left runners on second and third with two outs in the bottom of the third, the Huskies took the lead at 6-5 after a triple and single. Ursinus had runners on first and second with no outs in the bottom of the fourth and did not score any runs. That ultimately was the Bears last best chance as they were retired in order in the last three innings.

Carr went 2-for-3 against the Corsairs with her two home runs and added a hit against the Huskies. Stuempfle and Rea each went 2-for-3 against Southern Maine while Evanchik swiped three bases against the Huskies.
