KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Ursinus softball team responded with a pair of wins on their second day of their Florida Spring Break Trip on Sunday. The Bears defeated Nazareth 6-2 in their morning opener before winning a wild 12-11 game in walk-off fashion over Alverno.
After the Bears went down in order in the top of the first, the Golden Eagles took the initial 1-0 lead on an RBI groundout in the bottom of the first. Nazareth added another run in the bottom of the second on a two-out single after an error set up runners on first and third base. The Bears had their first nine batters retired in order before sophomore
Anna Evanchik reached on a fielding error by the Nazareth second baseman to lead off the top of the fourth inning. That inning opened the floodgates as senior
Kayla Carr hit her third home run in two days to tie the game at two. Three straight singles loaded the bases and first-year
Alexia Weidner came through in the clutch with a two-out two-run single to give the Bears a 4-2 lead. Weidner advanced to second on the relay throw which allowed her to also score when first-year
Maddie Rea hit a two-run single of her own to make it 6-2. The damage done in that inning was all the Bears needed to earn their first win down in Florida on this trip as Nazareth was unable to advance a runner past second base in the final four innings.
The Bears jumped on the Inferno in the bottom of the first inning with six runs by taking advantage of numerous miscues and stunningly no hits. Sophomore
Anna Evanchik led the inning off with a walk and made her way to third from a stolen base and groundout. With two outs, the wheels completely came off for Inferno starting pitcher Riley Krider as she walked five straight Bears to bring in the first three runs. A hit by pitch made it 4-0 and removed Krider before two more hit by pitches made it 6-0. Alverno got a run back in the top of the second that made it 6-1 and the Bears got the run back in the bottom of the third to go back up six runs at 7-1. Junior
Leah Bonsignore led the inning off with a double and came around to score on an error two batters later. The Inferno began to work their way back into the game as they got a run from a two-out RBI single in the top of the fourth that made it 7-2 before getting three more runs in the top of the fifth to cut the lead down to 7-5. Ursinus got a run back in the bottom of the fifth when Rea scored from a fielder's choice, but had another potential run tagged out at home on the play that ended the inning. Alverno came alive in the top of the sixth by scoring four runs on four hits and one error to take their first lead of the game at 9-8. The Inferno kept their run going by adding two more runs in the top of the seventh to go up 11-8 for their sixth straight run of the game. However, the game took another wacky turn in the bottom of the seventh when Bonsignore singled to lead off the inning and senior
Keelie Hancock doubled to set up second and third with no outs. Rea singled in Bonsignore to make it 11-9 before senior
Christa Andrusiewicz singled in Hancock to make it 11-10 with no outs. With runners on first and third and one out, Carr dropped a single into centerfield to score Rea and tie the game at 11. After a force out for the second out, a dropped fly ball by the Inferno centerfielder allowed Carr to score and win the game for the Bears.
Carr continued her torrid start to the trip by going 2-for-3 with her two-run home run against Nazareth before adding a hit and two more RBI's against Alverno. Rea had a big day by going a combined 3-for-4 with five RBI's and two runs scored in the doubleheader while Weidner added a hit and two RBI's against Nazareth. Bonsignore went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI against Alverno and senior
Riley Coneeny went 2-for-2 with an RBI against Alverno. Sophomore pitcher
Lucy Wolf tossed a complete game against Nazareth allowing two earned runs on six hits with five strikeouts and just one walk in seven innings.
The Bears have Monday off before returning to action on Tuesday, March 17th as they will take on Ithaca at 12:15 p.m. and Endicott at 2:30 p.m.
