Softball Battles Ithaca and Endicott in Florida

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Ursinus softball team returned to action on Tuesday afternoon and took on Ithaca and Endicott on their third day of game action down in Florida on their Spring Break Trip.

Against the Bombers, Ithaca took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning following a pair of two-out runs. A double scored the first runner following a walk and stolen base before a throwing error scored the second run. Ursinus tied the game in the bottom of the fourth with a pair of runs off four hits. Senior Kayla Carr started the inning with a double and came around to score two batters later off a double from first-year Tierney Stuempfle. Sophomore Anna Evanchik singled in Stuempfle two batters later that tied the game. The Bears had a chance to take the lead in the bottom of the fifth when Carr doubled again with two outs and advanced to third off a single from senior Christa Andrusiewicz. However, a fly out ended the threat. Ithaca took the lead back at 3-2 in the top of the sixth following a leadoff double and errant throw to first base in the ensuing at-bat from a sacrifice fly. The Bears fought back in the bottom of the sixth as they tied the game off an RBI groundout from first-year Alexia Weidner. Evanchik reached from a fielder's choice and stole second before advancing to third from a single by senior Keelie Hancock. Weidner brought in Evanchik but the Bears stranded runners on second and third base to end the inning. The Bombers used momentum from that and jumped on the Bears for three runs off two hits and an error to take the lead for good at 6-3 in the top of the seventh. Ursinus was no-hit in five innings by Endicott as the Gulls scored two runs in the first, one in the fourth, and five in the bottom of the fifth that ended the game. Carr, Stuempfle, and Robinson all had two hits for the Bears against Ithaca.
