Grehawick's Gem Leads Baseball over Mount Aloysius

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Six shutout innings from sophomore right-hander Alex Grehawick led the Ursinus College baseball team to a 9-1 victory over Mount Aloysius College on Wednesday evening.

The victory marks the Bears' ninth straight as they improved to 11-4 overall, while the Mounties fell to 5-9 on the season. Grehawick (2-1) pitched a season-best and career-high six shutout innings, scattering four hits and striking out four batters.

First-year Jamie O'Neill relieved Grehawick and picked up his second save, pitching three innings while allowing an unearned run and striking out two Mounties. At the plate, junior outfielder Brandon Sullivan finished 3-for-5 with two RBIs and three runs scored. He extended his hitting streak to six games and recorded his eighth multi-hit game of the season.

First-year Brett Barrett, sophomore Isaac Gesford and senior Kyle Rosenfeld each added two hits apiece for the Bears while also scoring a run in the victory.

Ursinus grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as Sullivan singled to open the frame before scoring on a Mount Aloysius defensive error. Grehawick cruised through the second inning, needing just eight pitches to retire Mount Aloysius in order.

He carried the momentum through the third and fourth innings, retiring six of the seven batters he faced to keep the Bears ahead by one. Ursinus responded in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring a run on two hits to increase its lead to 2-0. Barrett led off with a one-out single before consecutive passed balls moved him to third with one out. Gesford then delivered his team-leading 21st RBI with a single to right field to extend the lead.

Grehawick allowed a one-out single in the fifth but recorded a strikeout and a flyout to strand the runner and keep the Bears ahead by two. Ursinus added another insurance run in the bottom half of the inning as Sullivan scored on a balk with two outs.

In his final inning of work, Grehawick worked around a leadoff single and recorded back-to-back strikeouts to send the Bears back to the plate. Two quick outs threatened Ursinus in the bottom of the sixth inning, but Gesford's second hit and a single by junior Marco Maiuolo extended the Bears' lead to 4-0.

Mount Aloysius scratched across an unearned run in the top of the seventh to cut the deficit to 4-1, but Ursinus responded with four runs in the bottom half of the inning to take an 8-1 advantage.

Senior George Nestor opened the inning with a leadoff double, while Sullivan replaced him on second with a two-base hit down the left-field line. After a pitching change, sophomore Matthew Callahan reached on a walk, and stolen bases by Sullivan and Callahan moved both runners into scoring position.

Sophomore Luke Kopec singled to left field to score Sullivan, while Callahan crossed the plate when Kopec stole second base. Leading 7-1, Barrett followed with an RBI single to score Kopec and give Ursinus a seven-run cushion.

The Bears added their final run in the bottom of the eighth as Sullivan singled home Rosenfeld from second following a two-out double.

O'Neill closed out the ninth, rolling a 5-4-3 double play before striking out the final batter to secure the 9-1 victory.

Ursinus returns to action Thursday afternoon and is scheduled to take on Wesleyan University at 3 p.m. at the Ripken Baseball Complex at Ebbets Field.
