MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – A career day on the mound from senior right-hander
Dan Bass lifted the Ursinus baseball team to its 10th straight victory, a decisive 7-0 win over Wesleyan University on Wednesday afternoon at the Ripken Baseball Complex.
The victory improved the Bears' record to 12-4 this season, while the Cardinals fell to 3-7 overall. The win marked Ursinus' fifth straight in South Carolina over spring break, during which it has outscored opponents 47-15.
Bass tossed a career-high eight shutout innings, scattering five hits and striking out six to improve to 2-1 on the season. Junior
Ben Couture relieved Bass in the ninth inning, striking out two to secure Ursinus' first shutout of the year.
Sophomore
Luke Kopec led the Bears at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored. Junior
Brandon Sullivan recorded his fifth straight multi-hit game with two hits and has now scored a run in each of the last seven contests. First-year
Brett Barrett and sophomore
Isaac Gesford each added two RBIs and are tied for the team lead with 23 on the season.
For the seventh straight game, Ursinus scored in its first chance at the plate, scoring two runs to take an early lead. Sophomore
Matthew Callahan started the rally with a one-out single, and consecutive walks by Kopec and senior
Shane Beaver loaded the bases. Barrett then jumped on the first pitch he saw, delivering a two-run single to center field.
Wesleyan threatened in the bottom of the first, loading the bases with one out on a pair of singles and a hit-by-pitch. Bass responded by striking out the next batter and inducing a groundout to second to escape the jam.
Ursinus added two runs in the third on four hits and a walk. Kopec led off with a single and later scored on a double to left-center by Beaver to make it 3-0. After a wild pitch and a walk put runners on the corners with no outs, Gesford singled home Beaver from third. A fielder's choice and a lineout double play ended the inning with the bases loaded.
The Cardinals put their leadoff hitter on in the bottom of the third via an error, but a flyout and a line-drive double play back to Bass ended the threat.
The Bears extended their lead to 6-0 in the fourth, scoring two runs on three hits. Sullivan singled to lead off, and Callahan followed with a double to put two runners in scoring position. Kopec drove in Sullivan with a single to center, and a groundout brought home Callahan.
Bass continued to cruise, striking out two in the fourth and inducing a 4-6-3 double play in the fifth. Ursinus added an insurance run in the seventh, and Bass fanned two more in the bottom half to keep the Ursinus lead at six.
In his final inning of work, Bass induced two groundouts and recorded his sixth strikeout to cap his outing. Couture entered in the ninth and struck out two to complete the shutout.
Ursinus closes out its spring break trip against The College of New Jersey on Thursday morning at 9 a.m. at the Ripken Baseball Complex.
