IMMACULATA, Pa. – The Ursinus Softball team swept a pair of games from Immaculata on Thursday afternoon in non-conference action. The Bears outlasted the Mighty Macs 6-3 in eight innings during game one before rolling in game two, 11-4.
In game one, the Mighty Macs gained the initial 1-0 lead after getting an RBI single with two outs to score a runner on second base. Immaculata once again struck with two outs in the bottom of the third when they extended their lead to 2-0 off an RBI double. The Bears put their first two batters on base to start the top of the fourth which included their first hit of the game. A single loaded the bases with one out and senior
Riley Coneeny drove in the Bears first run on an RBI groundout in the ensuing at-bat to make it 2-1. Sophomore
Anna Evanchik was hit by a pitch with one out in the top of the sixth and stole second base to put herself in scoring position. It proved to be crucial when junior
Leah Bonsignore doubled her in two batters later to tie the game at two. Ursinus left the bases loaded in the top of the sixth and two runners on in the top of the seventh, but senior pitcher
Christa Andrusiewicz set down the Mighty Macs in order during both innings to force extras. A single from Bonsignore in the top of the eighth set the Bears up with runners on first and third with no outs after having a runner placed at second to start. First-year
Alexia Weidner squeezed in Coneeny with a bunt single and put the Bears up 3-2. First-year
Maddie Rea followed by doubling in both runners on base to extend the Ursinus lead to 5-2. Rea then scored on an error in the next at-bat to make it a 6-2 game. The Mighty Macs brought in a run behind their runner placed on second in the bottom of the eighth before Andrusiewicz closed out the win.
The Bears started fast in game two as senior
Kayla Carr continued her torrid first month of play with a two-run home run, her seventh of the season, to make it 2-0. First-year
Nina Davidson doubled two batters later and came around to score to put Ursinus up 3-0 following an error from the Immaculata third baseman. The Mighty Macs rallied to score two runs with two outs in the bottom of the first behind three hits to make it 3-2. Evanchik got one of the runs back for the Bears in the top of the third as she hit a solo home run to make it 4-2. However, Immaculata put runners on first and second in the bottom of the fourth with two outs and a two-run double tied the game at four. Ursinus countered right back in the top of the fifth as Bonsignore continued her big day with a two-run double down the left field line that gave Ursinus a 6-4 lead. Ursinus held that lead until the top of the seventh when they got major insurance with five runs to go up 11-4. The Bears loaded the bases with one out and got a two-run single from Andusiewicz that made it 8-4. Carr followed with an RBI single to make it 9-4 and first-year
Tierney Stuempfle followed with a two-run double that capped the scoring at 11-4. The rest of the game was called due to darkness following the double from Stuempfle.
Carr went 4-for-5 with three RBI's and two runs scored with her home run. Bonsignore combined to go 5-for-7 with three RBI's and two runs scored in the doubleheader and Evanchik went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI's in game two. Andrusiewicz went 2-for-5 with two RBI's and two runs scored in game two and earned the complete game win in game one behind allowing three runs (two earned) off six hits while striking out six. Sophomore
Lucy Wolf earned the win in game two after allowing four runs (three earned) off five hits with three strikeouts plus three walks.
The Bears return to action on Saturday, March 28th as they will host McDaniel for their Centennial Conference opener starting at 1:00 p.m.
